Hannah will miss a pretty interesting complex evolution being done on the Lincoln by about a month, it sounds like, if she is taking a month of leave after finishing prototype. You're right to be relatively unconcerned, she'll be fine. Regarding math in the early part of training, math in Power school is the same for all the ratings. It's basic algebra, getting a little bit into logarithms and exponential equations, plus some very basic trig. If they did well in the first year of high school algebra, they'll do fine - if they had a second year of algebra, the math will be easy for them. When I went through the program, they didn't have separate "A" school for nucs, and as an MM, the math was nothing, but the electrical ratings would have had a little more math. I suspect that now that they have special "A" school for nucs, that they have upgraded the math that MMs get, to better prepare them for Power school, so I would think that math in "A" school is pretty similar for all three ratings. Math is one of the first classes in Power school, and although they will use math throughout their careers, after the first couple months of Power school, nucs don't have any more specifically math courses.

Wendy, it doesn't matter where he was when he got the ticket. No matter where he is, he's always in the Navy. If speeding tickets of any kind affected future promotions there wouldn't be a Chief in the entire Navy.

My son said the same thing about the math until he got to power school. Then it depends on their rate. Alex is and ET. I think the math gets tougher for the MM's also.

As far as I know, sailors have never been separated for minor things like inspections. Chiefs, however, are known to threaten ( gently) all kinds of dire conseqences to get sailors to get in line. As far as separation for failling classes? When Alex went through the program in 07-08, sailors that washed out of the Nuke program were sent to alternate rates somewhere in the Navy. They were separated from the Nuclear Navy not the US Navy. There really is no room for failure in the Nuke program. These young men and women are responsible for the safe operation of Nuclear Reactors. There has not been an accident in the fleet, involving a power plant, in more than 30 years.

Going to a captain's mast can be like a really unpleasant trip to the principle's office, all the way to like appearing before a magistrate. It is nothing like jail. Mast's can administer non-judicial punishment all the way to recommending a courts marcial. My son's friend ended up in going to a captain's mast because he did not stop another sailor from driving drunk. In that case he recieved a letter of repremand and a loss of pay. In other cases sailors have been offered separation rather than a courts marcial.

Hi Dawn,
It usually means the ship is moving from one coast to the other without using the Panama Canal, or going around Cape Horn (tip of South America). It's normally done as a six month deployment.

jmc18, As the others have told you, your son needs to ask for help. But I also know that the pressures of power school and lack of rest often make students panic. He might be looking to you to vent and that can be good for him. Not so good for Moms. Just keep positive thoughts and a positive attitude when you talk to him. Ask him how the study hours are going. Ask him about the available tutors and if his fellow students can help. Most of all remind him that the Navy would never have put him in the Nuke program if they didn't believe he was Nuke material. The calmer you stay the better it is for him. Many of our group can tell you that their Nukes had the same worries and made it through power school. He doesn't need to be the top of his class, he just needs to pass.

Gini, Just a few suggestions from a Mom who's been through this twice. In a few days you will recieve THE BOX. It will contain everything that your son took with him to BC. His civilian life will be returned to you in a box. So stock up on the tissues, we all cry when it arrives. My other suggestion is to go to the store and buy every encouragement card you can find. Mail is their life line. Although they can only write on Sundays, they get mail everyday. They look forward to every mail call, so write daily. Get family and friends to write. Just remember, no food, no perfume, no writing on the outside of the envelope or pictures you wouldn't want a 5 year old to see. I made the mistake of sending letters to my youngest son with POOH on the envelopes. They teased him everytime one arrived. I still think it was funny and now so does he.

Bummer, Dawn - ship's movement could be a problem, for sure. One thing that may help her is that she will still be pretty new on the boat, and not qualified anything yet, which could let her off the hook for being "useless" (no offense :) ).

Wendy, I will definitely keep your son in my thoughts and prayers. But please be prepaired for the Navy to come down hard on your son. The Navy has a fortune invested in its Nukes and losing one or more to a traffice accident is not something they want to happen. So, they may choose to make an example of your son and the other driver. He may not be driving that car for a while, or something along that line. I don't want to upset you or have your worry, just want you to be prepared. In the end, all will work out for the best. The Navy needs its Nukes.
