Lori, When in Charleston take your family to Hyman's Seafood on 215 Meeting Street, phone 843-723-6000. When we were there a year ago, we also enjoyed the craft market downtown and a carriage ride past some historic buildings. Downtown is beautiful.

Lori(OH), Amazing what a little bit of freedom will do for the attitude!!!

Laura,
Your advice to nucs in DEP to take college classes if they have the time is brilliant! Math especially (algebra, including elementary trigonometry) is crucial to success in Power School. If an aspiring nuc is not very comfortable with algebra, they WILL struggle in Power School, and a class at a community college prior to entry could make all the difference in the world. Next on the list should be physics, then chemistry, if they have the time.

Hi Dawn,
FYI - the Lincoln is currently in the shipyard in Bremerton until around the end of the year for some work. Everett's actually a nicer base, with a lot more to do, although housing is probably less expensive around Bremerton. When the ship is in Bremerton, which is every couple of years, they run fast passenger ferries between the shipyard and Everett for the crew who have households estabished in Everett. I think the trip takes just over an hour each way.

I don't know any affordable hotels near attractions. But you might have your boyfriend check around. A lot of sailors have their cars and they are always giving each other rides and going together to go sightseeing and out to dinner. It might be nice for you to meet some of his friends. They will be part of his life so some time into the future.

There are a couple of other factors that could be making for longer waits in DEP for nucs right now. The main one is that the long shutdown at the NY prototype site (see the Discussion Groups above, under "View All" - any discussion with "NY" in the titlw will probably touch on it) undoubtedly created a bottleneck in the training pipeline that will have to be cleared, since many. many nucs were on hold for several months. Second, there may be a longer wait in general for females; since females aren't currently permitted to serve on submarines, but only aircraft carriers, only about half of the Navy's shipboard nuc billets are open to females, which could be impacting wait times as well.

Casey--I haven't had a drawer under an oven in ages--that's where we finally found the rest of the pots and pans. And yes, you most likely will have to get some cheap plastic glasses, paper plates, etc. I've left stuff behind such as ice tea pitchers, glasses, extra dishclothes--every time we've been there. Sounds like others have done the same! Do you suppose they count on us to add to their kitchens????--lol

Casey - we stayed in the 4 br villa over Thanksgiving. Our unit had coffee pot, toaster, microwave and place settings for four with silverware. I think we were short a drinking glass or two, but I had stopped at the Dollar General just up the street and got some paper plates and disposable cups. There were pots and pans. If you are planning on making something special and need a certain pan, you may want to take it. I bought a cheap set of mixing bowl and some spatulas, and left them at the unit. We are going to be there the weekend of June 5 for my son's Power school grad. Just a few posts before yours, someone mentioned a grill in the carport closet. According to the brochure on the villas, they should all have grills. You are also close to the NEX and commisary, so can pick up something if you need it. Overall, I think they try to have the basic stuff there for you. Have a great time with your boyfriend!!

We stayed at the Country Inn & Suites. The breakfast was very nice and the hotel affordable. They gave my son and his friends a really good rate. They have to move off base as soon as they graduate from power school if they are not staying at GC for prototype.

Mrs. C. My son was also one of those kids that went into the Navy after a civilian life where everything came easy. For the first time he had to study, and work his tail off. He didn't like it all that much and so he found his outlet. Make his mother listen to endless complaints and generally drive me nuts. To make a long painful story short. He graduated, went on to prototype and is now an ET on a fast attack out of Groton. He's fine, and eventually thanked me for giving him some one to vent to, instead of the guys around him. Hang in there!
