Wow! Karen thanks for the links!!!! I have tried since Spencer went to GL to understand his schooling - this really helped alot!!! Especially the prototype, because that is where he is right now, and I never understanding when he explains it to me!!!!! This cleared up so much, and now I feel like I know what is going on!!!!

Congratulations to the brave Navy Seals who rescued Capt. Phillips today!!

I understand now Kathleen - I mistakenly thought you were referring to a board at prototype, but realize now you were talking about his qualification as Reactor Operator (RO) and Shutdown Reactor Operator (SRO) on the boat. The final step for those is indeed the Commanding Officer. ETs can work unsupervised (all nucs can), but standing the RO or SRO watch unsupervised is another matter. When the reactor is operating, the RO always has direct supervision under either the Engineering Officer Of the Watch (EOOW), or the Engineering Watch Supervisor (EWS, a senior enlisted position). When the reactor is shutdown, the SRO watch is stationed, and as you say - they do not have direct supervision, so they are certified by the Captain in that position.

Question to you moms that just had sailors graduate Power school - when did your son/daughter find out whether they would be staying in Goose Creek or going to Balston Spa? My son is in the June 5 Power school class and I am just wondering? Thanks. Congratulations to all of you and your sailors.
Comment by Mark on April 11, 2009 at 5:50pm
Is your son a staff instructor at prototype now, Kathleen? It sounds like he may now be certified as an instructor, which would explain the presence of the Captain, who wouldn't normally be present for a student's final board for qualification.
Comment by Mark on April 11, 2009 at 4:56pm
Wendy,
The final board is the final oral exam (before a panel of three staff instructors) at prototype. At that point, a sailor is a qualified nuclear operator. Arguably, until successful completion of that, a sailor isn't quite a nuc, anymore than a sailor going through SEAL training is a SEAL, prior to their final qualification. Since power school is the main hurdle for nucs though, I think it's fair for a power school grad to claim the honor.

Oh, I didn't even see that Wendy! Thanks. I will see what happens!!!!

Good afternoon!!! I haven't been on here in so long - I had to shut off notifications for the boards because so many were coming in and now I don't know how to turn them back on, and I forget to come on here everyday.

I am so glad to hear that so many are passing their tests - it is tough. For a while there Spence was really worried, but now he says he is all caught up, and even ahead of the game (he is in Prototype at Ballston Spa).

He is very glad that he is actually back at school - he has this weekend off, because he just got off 7 days of days. He is adjusting going from days to mids to swings, but just at least wants to be doing something. I heard that his class MIGHT graduate early July, and he hasn't heard that yet, so he is asking around.

I will read through posts, but it sounds like a lot has been going on. I will also keep everyone in my prayers - it is tough going through this.

On a side note - does anyone have any sailors that are over dealing with that hostage situation with the captain of that ship that the pirates tried to take over?

Becca, ouch on the foot! My best healing thoughts to you.

Here's to all the sailors working so hard. Nuke isn't easy, not should it be. May there be many happy grads soon!
