I guess I am a mean mom, too. NO television during the week. We taped everything and they could watch it on the weekend. That didn't happen too often because they were wrestlers and were gone to meets. Also, the computer was in the family room where everyone could see what you were doing so no bad stuff on it either.

Bonnie,
On Trident boats, the opportunities for working out are pretty good - they have some stationary equipment, and they have enough room to run laps in the missile compartment. Legend has it that marathons have been run that way. Regarding air quality, as it happens I wrote a lengthy post on the subject in response to a question about allergies in the submoms group in the past week you may want to check out. Not sure how long your son has been on the boat, but the first couple of years for an officer on subs, they rotate through as division officers in one or two of the nuc divisions. All officers on a boat, with the exception of the supply officer are qualified nucs, and start out working with the nucs while they work on their qualifications as Engineering Officer of the Watch (EOOW), and Engineering Duty Officer (EDO). After a couple of years, I believe they go back to Groton for a short time for Advanced Officer's Sub School, where they get some in depth familiarization with what the sailors in the forward part of the boat do, namely communications, weapons, navigation, and sonar. Then they go back to their boat and rotate through a few of those divisions/departments before their first shore tour. The four nuc divisions are Reactor Controls, Electrical, Mechanical (as Main Propulsion Assistant, i.e. MPA) and Reactor Labs (ELTs). They report to the Ship's Engineer (a LCDR) on his second sea tour. Another forward division officer also reports to the Engineer, the DCA, or Damage Control Assistant, who has the "A"-gang mechanics. The main questions to avoid are anything dealing with scheduled times for entering and leaving ports, and specific information regarding the reactor. Actually so much of submarine operations is considered sensitive, it's hard to set out guidelines beyond those and some other obvious ones. Basically - ask away, responders will generally know what is OK.

Hey Laura, I took that class (STEP) when I became a single parent. It was great and a big help.

Very excited, heard from my nephew today... on another forum I'm on, not Navy related. Might get to see him this summer!

So glad to hear they're moving. My son has been anxious - he graduated A school November 9 and was ready to get into the "petty officer suites". I had sent him a king cake for Mardi Gras and not heard from him. My younger son texted him today because I was concerned whether or not the cake had gotten there. He texted back that he would call sometime this weekend, but he was finally moving. I guess I will look for a "welcome to your new home" card to send.

When my kids gave me grief, I always told them "The person who is paying has the power, so do it!!!" Ya, they loved that!!

Laura - right after boot camp Spence came home, and proceeded to chew out his 14 yr old brother for giving me crap. the 14 y.o. basically said I can't touch him, blah blah blah, and all that attitude that comes with being a teenager. Spence looked at him and told him to get a grip, and he better realize I am the parent, and he has to do what I tell him and all this stuff.

I am very proud of how Spence turned out, and it was nice to know that he didn't think I was such a horrible parent growing up, and having him tell his younger brother off was the icing on the cake!!!! LOL!!!
