My son told me that a lot of the "grad holds" are taking classes. There is also a mom who said her son is taking college classes. Well, at least they are doing something better than scrub, shine, and repeat

Huh, I haven't heard that Wendy.

Should clarify - the break between Power and Prototype is SUPPOSED to be 2 weeks. With NY being a mess, it could be longer before you actually start prototype.

Yep, once you sign up for nuc, they've got ya. Not even the SEALs can touch you - which probably makes sense, since about 2 out of 3 wash out of SEAL training - so it's not a good bet for the Navy. BTW, nucs scrub their share of toilets, trust me... :-)

And like I told my son - at least he has a job, and a paycheck. It could be worse - I keep telling him, I know it is hard to be sitting around, and not being able to do alot, but he has a job, and money. He has his head on his shoulders good, and he knows this will pass.

Kelly - my son originally wanted to go SWCC as well. He wanted to be a Seal, and SWCC was an option. Then the nuke recruits saw his test results and said no way, go nuke, so he did.

With the nuke thing - he can't switch jobs. Please have him realize this - if you sign up for nuke, and you want out, or fail out, or get depressed and have to drop - THEY CAN PUT YOU WHERE THEY WANT. This should have been made clear at the time he signed papers - they made that very clear to my son. And two of his friends have dropped from nuke program, and now they are not doing their next choice. They don't get that choice.

I hate to say it, but if they want you scrubbing toilets, that is what they will do. It is frustrating all this is going on with NY, but they have to look at the big picture, and just push through. Every time I talk to Spence I tell him to hang in there - and he says he will, and he knows that once he is done with school, military life will be different, and even if it takes longer than expected, he will hang in there. He even said, he has built the rest of his working career around this nuke program, and he will follow it through.

Unless things have changed drastically, if a sailor has a contract for a technical school or program such as nuke, then even if they qualify for SEALS, they cannot break the contract. This happened to my hubby in the ET field... and the SEALS wanted him.

There are programs which allow for a change. I will try and find out of SEALS are one such now days. Hoppi might know.

Kelly - I don't know how many classes they are going to send to NY. They are sending one up there for sure - that is what my son said. That is why they started letting the 4 classes up there do checkouts - they have to get these classes going so they can make room. They have two buildings they use up there, and one of them they need for the new group coming in.

They also are shutting down Ballston for scheduled maintenance in March. They are pushing hard to get the last of 0801 out of NY because they have been there forever, and half of that class is already gone. From what I am hearing, 0801 will get out of there soon.

My son is 0803 and he has no idea when he will graduate - so again, I say to all the parents who will have sailors going to NY (because even though they aren't moving along very fast at all, they have to send them there) it is SLOW and have patience. I didn't in the beginning, but that was more because they kept saying they were starting back up, and then wouldn't. At least now I know what is going on.
Comment by Trina (Spencer's Mom) on February 17, 2009 at 7:40pm
Well, I just talked to Spencer - they are not back in school yet - they are able to do checkouts though, but they are only allowing about 30 a day, and there are 200 sailors, so do the math and you will see it is slow going.

He does not have any date on when school will actually start up, or when he will graduate. Right now they are trying to get 0801 out of there, because half the class already graduated, and they want at least the rest of that class out. They are shutting down again in March for maintenance, but this was scheduled, so Spence thinks they will still move along through things as long as everyone does what they are supposed to!!!!

I can only think of hearing of two sub accidents while I was in the Navy. One was a Russian sub surfacing under the Kitty Hawk, and one was a LA class my friend was on... don't know what damaged the sail while surfacing, but I dimly recall the sub surfaced up under one of the small boys in the carrier escort during training.

Accidents IN subs are rare also, safety is of utmost importance to the entire crew.

The only sub jokes I know are old navy jokes, not fit for polite company.
