Lea--also be sure if you sailor has not already done so to contact USAA for insurance. They have good rates.

Michelle,
I don't entirely disagree, and I respect what you have to say and the experience and service of your family. I certainly agree with you on importance of following the rules and supporting that with our sailors. I do believe that the inspection thing is sometimes overdone, though. Regarding morale and retention; a fine line is walked, and I believe that a calculation is often made that using inspections in this way on junior members of the military in the training phase won't hurt retention, because of the time passed before the reenlistment decision. I will also concede that I do not have the benefit of seeing the effects of the policy over more than my own six years of active duty. The staff issues I vaguely refer to at prototype don't having anything to do with drunkenness or off-duty conduct, just in case there was a misunderstanding there.

Carol,
Beyond the shutdown that Wendy mentioned (there are two plants, not sure if both need work before restart), there are apparently sensitive staff issues there, that have lengthy corrective actions.

I suspect that unusually tough inspections may be something that sailors in the nuc training pipeline will have to get used to for awhile. This may have a lot more to do with some of the problems in prototype (especially NY), and sending a message back through the training pipeline than issues with the sailors fresh out of boot camp in "A" school. Inspections are often used to attempt to send a message about discipline and adherence to standards in areas unrelated to uniforms or the living quarters. I suspect that this is what's going on here; I'm not a fan of the approach myself - I think it is often counter-productive in terms of morale and retention.

Hi Everyone, When our nuke was home at Christmas, he said that it was getting pretty crowded at Goose Creek due to the backups.

Norma, Did your daughters PIR packet say anything about grad and go?
Comment by Mark on January 27, 2009 at 10:50pm
Hi Pamela,
Your son is roughly a full year away from prototype, where the training delays are. It is way too far downstream for it to affect your son's training over the next several months. Nucs reporting dates to "A" school are based on when a class will start, and not being grad-n-go is not unusual. You are fortunate that you will get the weekend with him - he will be on his wa to GC before the end of next week. The Navy will be doing everything possible to get the flow going in the training pipeline, qualified nucs are needed in the fleet! Even given the extent of the issues at prototype, it would be very surprising if the normal flow wasn't restored by the time your son finally finishes power school a year downstream.

Norma,
The link below is the best authority on PIR dates for divisions at RTC. I see that the date for DIV 108 is 2/27, so if you are certain that is your daughter's division, you have the correct date, and your recruiter is mistaken.

It would be very, very strange to have language in their enlistment contracts saying that their active duty obligation would be extended for any time spent in training past two years. Obviously, I don't have access to their contracts, though. I don't think there is anything to the rumors you have heard; they just don't make sense, especially since the issues at prototype are so completely out of their control. If the rumors were true, I would contact my congressman.

Yeh Erica--so glad you saw Goose Creek up close and in person (as far as allowed to see, that is.) Hope you had time for site seeing.

Paula - for NY they have to 'pass' tests before they can teach. These are civilians training, and due to the troubles they have had up there, no one will be teaching unless they pass testing and ca prove they know what they are doing.
