That's rough, Dorothy - roommates certainly help keep living expenses down. It makes sense that he would have to restart the watchstanding part of the qual program. The classroom and systems checkout part shouldn't have to be redone though. My own experience was twenty years ago, but the watchstanding part can be done in about two months, as I recall. My own son isn't in the nuc program; he's in training to be a sonar tech on subs, but I am still involved in the nuc program as a civilian (not in the initial training end, though). Do you know if they have your son on twelve hour days still, with the plant shut down, or are they working eight hour days until they start up again? If they are on eights, he'll recognize eventually that he's getting a pretty good deal now, especially he he chooses to get out after six years active duty, as most nucs do. The life of a nuc shipboard is quite arduous in most cases, though it is usually personally rewarding, and shore duty in upstate NY is quite pleasant by comparison, if the work day is only eight hours.

Dorothy,
June or July sounds accurate. I work at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, and I know we have a team scheduled for work at BP around April, and is expected to take up to a month to complete. I won't personally be on this job, and don't know the full extent of all work being done, but do know that our planned work has to be completed before the plant can resume normal operations.

Ronette, I can't remember exactly who I got this information from but MOST of the time they get their final travel orders the Weds. before PIR. This was true for our son and his division but have also heard this from several other moms. I guess the fact is you have to be prepared to be flexible!

Welcome to the nuke family Brian. Our nuke was grad and go along with 6 others. Frankly, I think it depends on when seats on the planes to Charleston are available. I pity the people who have to make all these travel arrangements. Living here in Chicago, I know how often flights get delayed/cancelled at both Ohare and Midway.

I had National Security guys show up to ask me about a former ET friend who was applying for a top secret civilian job. Men in Black, indeed!

I did like the strength of the speech, I hope America can live up to it! I like that the senior Bushes wore purple scarves to show we can all pull together.

Wanda, if I get a minute, I'll look closer ... I am going on vacation tomorrow. I'm swamped and I must admit, glued to the TV, because the Inauguration means a lot to me personally. I didn't catch anything on a first read except discussing the badges... that freaked me out. Navy training sticks forever!

Get better soon, Katie!

I think we need a "What the heck is Need to Know"? thread. The Navy is always training the sailors, why not us?

need an edit function! "lunch or home." Not hoe! LOL.

I've been catching up... ah, clearances and security.

I was an ET in communications ... quite a while back, but yes, I had a Top Secret clearance as I worked with crypto gear. The FBI and Naval Intelligence did contact people to interview for the background checks. My hubby had a slightly higher clearance than I did! Anyway, clearances take time, and a ET or nuke without a clearance ... is not. They are still sailors, but they will be re-assigned.

Security badges have little to do with actual clearances. The badges are issued to show who belongs in a particular space or area. The color means little, badges change periodically. It is very important not to discuss the specifics of the badges, that was pounded into my head. when I was in Japan, we had to wear our badges (think laminated passes) at all times at work ... except when we went to lunch or hoe. We had to check our badges in and out, taking the out of the building could get you written up for a security violation. There were doors that some of us could step through, while others in the shop could not. Nuke school is one of those training grounds where there will be different security measures in place ... and this is NOT information which should be shared on a public board! In fact, I know all moms are concerned, but there are things you don't have the Need to Know. the color of their security badges in one of those things.

I don't want to sound harsh, just trying to explain it from the perspective of an ET (non-nuke, but I dated plenty of them!)

Whew - Jack's in a pretty big fix. Thanks Mary - this site is too valuable a forum for venting though, don't wanna mess that up. Speaking of CSI - I like the idea of Laurence Fishburne becoming a fixture, the guy is awesome. G'night all...
