Anti M--thanks for the chart info. I found it interesting and even made me more proud of my sailor's choice with the Navy!

When looking at the chart in the link below, you're looking for the rates with the "N: for nuke. SW is Surface Warfare (ships) and SS is subs.
Comment by Anti M on December 30, 2008 at 8:14pm
The Navy assigns the rates based on projections of shortages in those rates. Reenlistment of current sailors, what ships need more of which rate, that sort of thing. Knowing the manning levels for each rate in 2008 can give a hint, just a hint, of which rate may be assigned.

I found the CREO for 2008, hope it sheds some light on the process. Hope I get the link thing done right.

Hi Mary,
Do you know if they're still on 12 hour shifts even if they have completed all of their oral checkouts, and have only watchstanding signoffs left? That would certainly make a big difference. BTW, the NRC has no jurisdiction in the Navy Nuclear Power Program. The Navy (through Naval Reactors branch of NAVSEA) has all authority, something Admiral Rickover negotiated with Congress in the early days of the program. Naval Reactors is generally considered to be more stringent in their oversight and regulation then the Nuclear Regulatory Commission is in the commercial nuclear world. While NR is probably quite concerned with the training delays, moving the students around is not a call they are likely to make, that isn't really their role. It really is a shame if the students who have completed all of their non-watchstanding signoffs are being kept on 12 hour shifts "just because", but having spent my six years on active duty in the program, I wouldn't be shocked - part of the reason I didn't do twenty years. That said, I don't regret the six years I did do, it was a good experience on the whole.

It's natural for the guys on hold to be a little impatient to get to the fleet. Trust me on this though, when they do eventually get to their boats, they'll realize what a sweet deal they had being on hold at prototype.
Comment by Trina (Spencer's Mom) on December 30, 2008 at 10:21am
Pat - yeah, I guess I misunderstood. As of now, they are not sending any of the NY sailors down to SC - they are just leaving them sit up in NY. But that could change as well. When he came home for Christmas he was told he was going to be starting back up when they all got back, and then they got back, and found out that they were on hold indefinately. So.....
Comment by Pat L. in IL on December 30, 2008 at 7:43am
Trina, I'm sorry I didn't make myself clear. I just meant that because A school is backed up, this will increase the load on trying to get sailors through the program. Then add the possibility of having to bring prototype back down to GC. My point was that it seems there could be an overload for a while. Let's hope Spence can get on with it soon!! Did I make myself any clearer?? Pat
Comment by Trina (Spencer's Mom) on December 29, 2008 at 11:11pm
Pat - Spence is done with A and power school. He got held up at prototype in NY. I guess this place is major ancient old - like some of the parts are older than WWII. So it is hard to fix. There is crap that went on up there, and unfortunately these sailors now have to sit and wait for everything to get figured out, and start up again.

I am sure that SC will be busier because they aren't sending anyone to NY anymore, so everyone has to stay down there.

Trina, I hear (through the grapevine, you know) that there is quite a back-up at Goose Creek for A school.
