Chipmunk, momterp and ProudofK--thanks for the prompt replies.  I SO much appreciate the sound and timely advice this group provides. Thanks again!

Nuke Loo's Mom - I have to concur with ProudOfK and I apologize for not being bolder with such a statement as well.

I spoke to my son last night and I asked him to double ck  on his thoughts for our Thanksgiving. He agrees with ProudOfK's sentiments as far as leave and travel. It is not fun to spend two days of leave flying back and forth and that is about what it has boiled down to for both our son flying home to us and us to him. And we are only halfway of what your son needs to travel.

Also, definitely a day early flight is best as well.

And he would need to make sure his leave chit is approved as well.

It is hard, I understand. My compliments on your son wanting to surprise you, but this school & military stuff is all new. I think it was the 1st Christmas that my son flew home, and barely missed the large power outage at the Atlanta airport. Then he flew back early due to the holiday. I was so thankful, because they had an unprecedented snow fall, such that school was cancelled.

Nuke Loo’s mom - if it were my son I would advise him to save his leave and his money and come home at Christmas instead when he would have a longer time. But if he insisted on coming for Thanksgiving I would definitely recommend the return flight be 24 hours earlier. When flying my son always left a day to spare on the return. In the military there is no excuse for being late - not cancelled flights, not snow storms, not missing a connection - you get the idea. I can only imagine how much you want to see him and him you. But to me anyway it’s just not worth the possibility of messing up his schooling. Best of luck.

Nuke Loo's Mom, your sailor will have a 300-mile radius (I believe) that he can travel within on a normal liberty and will need to request an actual leave to travel to California since it exceeds that radius. Definitely book a refundable ticket and give him time for weather delays, etc.

Nuke Loo's Mom - Sorry no one has had a chance to respond yet. - Okay, the sailors usually do not get out of classes until at least 4:30 / 1630 and then I don't recall if there is a check out at Thanksgiving like there is at Christmas or not. Our sailor has not been home for the last two Thanksgivings. We are in OKC and that flight from Charleston >ATL>OKC is hard enough, I can't imagine all the way to LAX!

He needs to allow 2 hours for getting through TSA and boarding. The airport is not too far away from GC, but if he is driving and parking, he needs to allow for that. I don't know if you are going Delta (since connecting in ATL) but if so, I would look on their website and find the # specifically for military flights. I don't know if that will work better than just calling them, and when I was booking last month, their lines were very busy. But military can have at least one checked bag for free, so that will take a little extra time, or tell him you have clothes at home ready for him.

If Sunday he has to report back by 1200, that is because they will have mandatory study time. The 1959 flight may still be pushing it! But you can always try.

Happy Fall Back Day Fellow Nuke Moms!
Question for the experienced Mom’s...any idea of when the sailors get liberty on Wednesday before Thanksgiving?  My son wanted to “surprise” us and bought flights home but they were outside of the allowable leave times (1700 Wednesday/1200 Sunday) and he had to cancel. Fortunately, he received a full refund because he cancelled within 24 hours.

Looking at flights that depart Charleston 19:59 on Wed and return on Sunday at 0921. These red eye cross country flights with stops in Atlanta between LAX will be brutal... but it will be so nice to see him again. Hoping there is enough wiggle room on either end that he (1) gets to his plane on time out of Charleston and (2) has enough time to get to GC on Sunday.

My sailor thinks this should work...but he hasn’t traveled during this time of the year since he was 3 years old. Has no appreciation for the chaos!  All I know is he really wants to come home. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks,

New Adventures - I sent candy and treats to my sailor for his classmates in both A school and Power School. They seemed to enjoy them.

Kbpoohbear - LOL!

The Hammer - Yes, us planners, be in control moms have to let go of the reins and let our children share them with the Navy. The fact that your sailor finished so quickly is unusual, and the orders as I recall don't always come out until maybe a month prior to graduation, and some were later. I think there were some who didn't have their orders until after Proto grad.

The best you can do, is to plan for your trip to graduation. Remind your sailor that depending on where he is going everything 1st has to fit into his vehicle, and secondly it then has to fit in the barracks or wherever that he is staying. Be prepared to help him deal with excess if need be. If able plan for a couple of extra days both before and after graduation!

Once he has his orders, he should be given a contact for his sponsor to help him through the paperwork and transition. That will definitely be much easier if he is not having to stand duty someplace after graduation. Also, he needs to get his medical and dental paperwork all up to date and checked out.

You know... I work in government... so you would think that I would be used to the waiting game... but waiting for orders for ship assignment and duty station is super hard! Graduation isn't until Dec 6th! I want to strategize and plan the move! I want to ensure that every detail is taken care of!

And then I realize that my sailor is 25 years old and can handle all of this himself.

Semper Gumby.
