OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

In light of observed changes and impact of the Coronavirus Delta Variant and out of an abundance of caution for our recruits, Sailors, staff, and guests, Recruit Training Command is restricting Pass-in-Review (recruit graduation) to ONLY fully immunized guests (14-days post final COVID vaccination dose).

Comment by ProudParent on June 6, 2019 at 8:46am: My husband and I will celebrate 23 years of marriage this fall. We live in eastern N.C. and recently downsized. We will downsize again in a few years when I retire from teaching. It is refreshing to get rid of stuff that you thought family might want. They really don't! :) I'm not keeping stuff anymore.

We have two boys and our oldest is our sailor. We had no clue that he wanted to join the military. It came as a total shock but after one semester at a university he came home and said he wasn't going back and he was joining the Navy. So far it seems to have been a really good decision. He knew he needed some structure and loves his country deeply so this seemed like a good idea to him. He qualified last week and we are looking forward to attending Prototype graduation at the end of June.

Our youngest in still in high school and doesn't seem to be interested in the military. He still doesn't know what he wants to do after school. He has time so we aren't concerned.

This site has been really helpful to me. When my sailor starts talking about certain things it feels good to have an idea of what he is talking about. I have appreciated having a heads up on what to expect. PowerSchool was so difficult but reading that Prototype could be easier for some sailors gave me hope that things would get better. It did! He qualified much sooner than expected and has a few weeks to have an easier schedule. We are looking forward to seeing what his duty station will be.

Comment by ProudParent on June 6, 2019 at 8:23am: Kerriknowz we went to the A school graduation and I'm glad that we were able to attend. Our sailor kept saying not to come that no one comes and it isn't a big deal but it was really nice. It was indoors and you are able to get great photographs. We also attended PowerSchool which was outside and much larger and we are looking forward to attending Prototype in a few weeks.

Kerriknowz - I went to A school grad; it was a smaller ceremony than power school but I'm glad I went.

There seem to be a plethora of of things to see and do, so I thought I would reach out to my sea sisters to ask what some of your favorites are. Thanks!

My husband and I will celebrate 10 years this Thanksgiving. My son left for bootcamp in January 2018 and is graduating PS on Friday (I'm here in Folly Beach as I type!). I've got a 21 year old daughter at home and a 106lb labrador retriever. We also have a cat that we are all allergic to... so my husband made her kitty doors so she can go in and out at will. Saw my son for the first time in 6 months today and cried.... and I can't even think about when he gets into the pipeline... just one day at a time.

I mostly lurk on this site... but wanted to take a moment to thank everyone for answering my questions and being so supportive. Your efforts truly make a difference!

Comment by JayDee659 on June 6, 2019 at 4:50am: Kerriknowz I went to A school grad. As B'sNukeMom said, its a small ceremony with great photo ops and a chance to meet instructors. Afterwards we enjoyed a day in Charleston with our Nuke. Wouldn't have missed it for the world!

Son, nuke, 25, has been in Navy almost 6 years, plans to stay in career, is an EM2, and currently stationed on the USS Tennessee (blue), a boomer sub based out of King's Bay, Georgia (he is specifically in the Navy because he wanted to be on a sub). He's hoping to go back to Charleston at the end of this year, as his time with this boat is up. Daughter, 24, lives locally, working toward getting into a Master's in Occupational Therapy. Two dogs, no grandchildren.

Comment by ProudOfK on June 6, 2019 at 12:14am: I too have been enjoying reading the bios today but did not have time to add mine until now. Our nuke left for bootcamp the end of February 2017 (about 9 months after he graduated high school) and he has now been in the fleet since January - assigned to the Vinson carrier. He is a 21 year old ETN We are very fortunate to have him in our home state just 4 hours away. When he was in the pipeline and I was tempted to be envious of any mom who was fairly close to GC or BS I would remind myself that my time to have my sailor close might be coming - and it came. We also have a 26 year old special needs daughter who misses her big - little brother even though she doesn't have to share our attention when he's gone. He has become her 'Big' brother over the years in every way but age. I grew up in Minnesota but have lived in Washington state (both the west side and east side) for almost 40 years - yikes I suddenly feel very old.
And I am also one of those very fortunate people that have gotten to meet B'sNukeMom. If any of you ever get the chance take it. I wish I had half her energy.

Also Kerriknowz - I went to A school grad and was very glad I did. We all went to BC grad and Power School grad but just I went to A school grad. I was sorry my husband couldn't be there too but on the other hand I had some really quality time with just my nuke. And he and I flew home together the next day - which was great except for him getting food poisoning from something he ate in the New York airport and then throwing up multiple times on the looonnng flight from New York to Seattle.
