In 'A' School they live in a 2 person bedroom. A bathroom joins 2 'bedrooms' and is shared by 4 ppl. The rooms consist of a small fridge, microwave and bunkbed. Each sailor is given their own desk, chair and a closet that locks. The desk also has storage that locks. They can have a coffee maker if it doesn't have an 'auto turn on' feature and has to go through formal approval for them to have it in their room. My son keeps a supply of ramen noodles and snacks in the room as well. They can have whatever sheets or blankets of their own. I bought my son a really nice fleece blanket with his initials on it. The sheets the military issued doesn't bother him. There is a common area with a living room that is shared by many rooms. I'm told this is where many of the D & D games are played. They also have access to a free laundry room. My son said the biggest issue he has is with toilet paper. None of the other three that share the bathroom with him, want to buy toilet paper. He buys a supply, and has started hiding it because they have been non-contributing. He said the last straw was when he came in and his roomate was using toilet paper to wipe down his desk. They have to buy their own cleaning supplies to dust/clean the room and bathroom which are inspected on a fairly regular basis. It's a pretty nice setup.
melindy or anyone, so are their rooms just bedrooms and a small kitchenette? I'm assuming they have a living room, with a couch, chair, desk??? Is there a picture of dorms some where?
melindy: My son's GF and my daughter pitched in and bought him a 'special' set of D & D dice. My husband also wanted him to be athletic, but he just wasn't. He enjoyed riding his bike, but not much else. He said he has enjoyed exploring the wooded areas on base.
Mary: My son loves D & D. He even manages to play D & D with his old gang back home via skype. His friends set up a computer and he skype's his plays. My Daughter also got into it, because of him. She said the first time he skyped with his 'old' friends from HS, they were shocked to see him with short hair. His hair was shoulder length before he left. His friend said "Gee, the Navy must have a magical silver pair of scissors to have cut your hair" To which my son replied, 'Yea, well the Navy has a whole closet full of magical silver scissors". He was a nerd when he left, and he's still a nerd.
I am looking for anyone going to Nuke A school graduation on April 26th. I am unable to be at the graduation but would love to have a picture or video of it. Let me know and I will PM my sons name. Thanks Ingrid
Debi - hang in there. Our son had to get medical clearance after bootcamp because he got slightly anemic. The don't serve enough red meat in bootcamp, trying to keep the fat content down! Then he also had developed a slight ulcer from the antibiotics they gave everybody (he had to take his orally becasue he was allergic to the penicilliln in the shot) 'caus everyone was sick. Some of the nukes who were held over at the Temp Holding Unit got sent on in just a few days. Some, like our son who had requested subs and had to get a waiver for his "history of ulcers" (which the Navy gave him!) take longer. But he's at Charleston now and starts A school on Monday so it works out eventually. Just keep encouraging your son. Sometimes it can get frustrating for them. We'll pray for you.
