HEY! We hit 1300!!  Who guessed March 26?

Hello Everyone -- I appreciate all the good info everyone has posted here.  My son will go to BC in October.  We are just beginning to get an understanding of what he will be facing as a Nuke ... still pretty overwhelming, but good to hear all your experiences.  Good thoughts to all.

BAS (Basic Allowance for Subsistence) is currently $323 a month for enlisted members.  This is an allowance and is not deducted from their base pay but an addition to their pay when they are authorized to receive it.  If you live in barracks you will not receive BAS but will have a chow card to use at the chow hall.  When they live off base they will receive it in their pay in addition to BAH (Basic Housing Allowance).  BAH is based on the cost of living in the area where they are stationed along with rank.  Unless there have been recent changes to policy I believe it still works this way.

If you are a single guy/gal who lives in the barracks, chow is free.  If you are in housing/married then the navy pays you supplemental pay $$$ in your check for food, then you pay back to eat at the chow hall.

About the pay, when they graduate prototype and receive the nuclear NEC they officially get paid their enlistment bonus (currently $11,000 for nukes it was $15,000 when my son joined and before that it was $21,000).

Submarine volunteers who are accepted for sub duty i.e. get orders to a submarine, are back paid submarine duty incentive pay of  $95 a month for every month starting from the first day of A school.  That is roughly another $2K in back pay.   The submarine pay depends on rank and time of service but goes up by a lot over time: a E5 with 4 years gets $250 a month in submarine pay.  They also get sea pay, a E4 with 2 years gets $160 and a E5 with 4 years gets $300 a month; that is on top of their submarine pay.   They also get the special duty assignment pay for being a nuke, $150 a month and later if they become a supervisor it becomes $375 a month.

When they reach E5 they start getting BAH which varies by region but in Groton it is $1191 a month.  BAH is tax free money: it is a monthly allowance not pay.  If you live with roommates it is pretty easy to bank half of that or more every month.  When you add it all up, these guys are making a ton of money.  It is possible to live comfortably and still save or invest 60% of your salary.

My son has been at Goose Creek since the end of December and so far I've sent about 1 package a month.....I think it's just as much for me as it is for him!  I get the box all put together and then set it on his bed and then as I find little things here and there I slowly start adding to the box until I have it filled (can you say over-filled!).  My son is NOT a candy eater so I look for other little snacks and goodies to add (it would be sooo much easier if he did have a sweet tooth!). Most everything I send he could probably buy at the NEX but I figure it's just one less thing he has to worry about with his busy schedule.....and of course I include a Subway card each time :)  I find $5 DVD's at Walmart (not sure when he will have time to watch them, but at least he'll have them for some point in time), I've sent a couple of his fav shirts, his really comfy jammie bottoms (which he just got the other day and was sooo happy to get them 'cuz he said it's gotten cold again at night). It's fun to see what I can find to send and he always seems excited to receive the packages.....it makes me feel good and somehow I feel closer to him!

I double all that. In the almost 3yrs I've been here, I feel like I know so many of you and your sailors. And as a mother to 4, I don't think it matters how many you have, to see them grow up and away is both heart-wrenching and heart-warming. You raise them with the hope of someday seeing them independent, yet there's that piece of you that still wants to tuck them in at night.

I love all you moms (and wives and girlfriends and dads) for what you give to this site. It's not just for the 1995, and counting, that are here now, though. It's  also helped the families and sailors that are supported through what happens here. You are awesome and thanks so much!

Dor, you are a Mom among Moms--bless your heart, I think about you A LOT!!!! I wonder how your boys are (and yes, I worry about them too) and I wonder about you, but most of all I wonder how you come by your strength. I really do think about you a lot and have your family in my prayers!

Emily, you were one of the very first people to welcome me to this crazy roller coaster we call "Nuke World" and I think about you all the time too--especially when I see a zebra print. I physically have to stop myself from taking a picture and posting it for/to you. :) I'm so excited for Aaron to come home to you and your new home and for the two of you to be together again. You are both in my daily prayers also.

Military pay is public record.  http://www.navycs.com/2013-military-pay-chart.html

If they're an E-3 (boot camp and A school) they make $1787 monthly.

If they're a E-4 (power school or prototype) they make $1980 monthly.

In boot camp they do have money taken out of their pay for everything they are issued - clothing, uniforms, hygiene products so their checks upon leaving boot camp are lower.

In school they have no expenses that come out of their pay.  They should have invested in the Montgomery GI Bill which is $100 a month for the first 12 months they are. They recieve a huge amount to use for college when they get out of the military for this investment.  It is completely worth the small investment they make.

They do have taxes that come out and that is it.  They are allowed to eat at the chow hall for free and of course they pay no rent when living in the barracks.  If they are required to move out to an apartment for prototype they will receive additional pay to cover the rental costs.
