We heard Kings Bay is a newer facility so maybe your son will end up liking it.  I think my son would prefer the west coast to so it'll be interesting to see where he ends up at.

Jo1 - I believe the order he indicated was Washington State, San Diego, and Honolulu.  He is going to Kings Bay in Georgia.  He is the first I have seen in this group to be sent to Georgia.  Many of the sub vols are going to Groton.  I think most going to Washington lately are on carriers.  I think he wanted something on the Pacific because we are from the midwest and he has been in South Carolina and New York so it would have been a change.  Unfortunately, he didn't care much for the south east, and now he will be even more souther-east :)  I have been trying to get some first hand information about the base, but there are very few moms/wives in groups specific to those subs on here.

NavymomLG,

What base did your son end up getting and what did he want?  It's interesting to hear where the nukes end up at.  My son signed up for subs during BC but he's not sure what he wants yet.  He goes back and forth from carrier to subs.  He still has awhile until he finished with prototype.  In the end I guess the navy decides where they end up but it would be nice to know the percentage who get one of their 3 top choices.  Also it would be nice to know how many like where they end up and if they like carriers or the subs they ended up on.

Most sailors fly out the next day, Saturday. A few might leave Sunday or even later, but the vast majority leave right away. You will have Friday with your sailor, and then arrange to be at the airport the next day to give them their cell, laptop, whatever, to take with on the plane. Not enough time, I know.

If his name is on the title and the insurance, then he should be ok.  He will need proof of insurance and the car registration.  He does not need to change it to SC.  However, USAA does have great insurance rates for military and is worth looking at.

seathesee, when do they fly out? sunday after pir or sometime after that? Also do you know if we get to see the recruit on thursday or is it just friday and saturday? thanks

surfermom, thanks the name is in his and his fathers name as its not paid for yet, will he still need a letter? As for insurance he has it here in mass under both names can he keep that coverage or will he need to get it regd in south carolina? if he does have to reg in sc will anyone help him find ins? Thanks so much I am just trying to get ahead of some things, try to make it a bit easier for him.

My son didn't get any of his top three preferences, or the type of sub he thought he wanted, but is still excited to get to his new base. And now that some of his good friends have been at their bases for awhile (one at each of his top three choices), he is finding that what they were expecting isn't necessarily what they are getting. He is about one week away from finishing up ELT training and really looking forward to using what he has learned.  I am looking forward to his month at home!
