Hi Mary, Guam is 8,000 miles away so be careful what you wish for!  Lol.    The Virginia class subs have a good record of being  delivered to the Navy well ahead of schedule, then he will be based  at the sub's new  home port which could be anywhere.

Connie, congratulations to your son for passing his boards.  What a relief that must be.  My son is ahead of the curve and very close  to  being done but not  just yet, but none of the other ET  roommates have finished their qualifications  yet either so more  STUDY STUDY STUDY for all of them.

Dor,  the joke here is if  we  were located in Texas,  land the size of  New Hampshire would be called  a "county".  The states here are small ... I can drive 2 hours from my house and reach any of the other 5 New England states.   But yes I am VERY grateful our son will be based in Groton, CT so close to our home.

southcarolinamom--I hear you.  Before my son left one of his buddies came over and he started giving him all kinds of stuff--including his beloved winter coat.  Actually I was pretty proud of him then--that he realized he wouldn't need that coat again, and that everyone loved that coat.  Glad his friend will get use out of it.  He also passed on his trombone mutes and stand--he donated the trombone to the school band program.

They grow up and make us proud.

Taking my son today to recruiters ofc to go to Meps, he will be at Goose Lake tomorrow. He was so anxious he could not sleep and was talking a mile a minute. I finally convinced him to lay down at 4:30am and TRY to sleep alittle. Now I cant sleep. ugh! In 8 hours I will be taking my 17 yr old and handing him over to the Navy. My heart hurts but my head is telling me to be strong for him and be proud of his choice to join the Navy. Some kids his age have NO IDEA what they want to do with their lives, atleast he has some goals and will have a good future with the Navy opportunities :) Im so happy for him. Good luck to all you moms out there who are going thru what I am today and I thank the young men and Ladies who will be swearing in tomorrow to serve their country! SO PROUD! :)

We just sent our daughter off to OCS yesterday morning and I am missing her soooooo much. Although she called on her way to the base, I never got that call from the base today. Maybe they don't call on "check-in" day - does anyone know the answer to that? I heard that they don't meet their DI until Wednesday. I would love to hear from anyone who has experience with this. I know they can't call the first four weeks or more, and am wondering if I can send her letters that they will hold until she is allowed to receive mail. I am immensely proud of her and think this will be a wonderful step in her post-college life, but I can't help but start counting the days until her graduation. Such a kid-sick mom - I am sleeping in her bed tonight!!!

William great to hear your sailor is so close.  We were just skyping with ours.  He will be headed to USS Eisenhower out of Norfolk VA.  11/2 marks the 2 year anniversary of leaving for BC.  It does seem to have gone by fast.

Hi all, haven't been on this group in a while.  My son in now on his way back on the Enterprise.  He joined the ship in Dec.2011 (10 mos ago) shortly after graduating from BS.  He has been gone almost 8mos!  Nathan is an EM Nuke.  He has enjoyed his first deployment and learned a lot.

Hi William, my son's going to Groton, too... USS Missouri< also a Virginia-class sub, just what he wanted. Passed his boards yesterday ... the pipeline is OVER! It's been a fun 2 years for us all, eh? Hoping he comes home in 2 weeks for a quick visit from BS (I got a knee replacement this week and could sure use him on the farm for a few days) ... wonder if he'll look any different now that he's try a nuke!

Comment by William in Nashua on October 21, 2012 at 9:54am

My son got his orders to the USS Mississippi (SSN-782) the newest submarine in the Navy. It is a Virginia-class attack submarine, commissioned this summer. He will be based in Groton, CT -- a two hour drive from our house Lol.

Wow, that makes me feel proud to say my son is a part of that. :) Good luck to all the moms and dads who have kids leaving soon and Thank you to them for their service to the United States.
