Has anyone's sailor ever filed a special leave request chit to go out of the country (for vacation purposes)? Just curious to see how long it usually takes (we've been told to file at least 2 months prior to the targeted travel date, but just wanted to see what it was like for someone who has gone through the process).

Power School always shuts down for at least a week over Christmas.  They still have some watches to stand, though I believe they are scaled down a bit.  They are stood by people who choose to stay in town, or may be on restriction - I doubt anyone in Power School is denied leave during that period, unless they're on restriction for something.  There generally are enough volunteers to handle the watches.

My son graduated from A school last August and took a week of leave. Then last Christmas he was in Power School and he took more leave and came home again for Christmas. He graduated NPS 2 weeks ago and was home on leave again.

I haven't been on for a few days, so it has taken a little while to catch up.  Back to the conversation about classing up for A-school.  My son said that there are so many ET, EM, and MM taken for each class.  Then they go by the alphabet, but they start where they left off with the last class.  So, if the last class got filled with Ss for the ETs then they start with the Ts for the next class of ETs.  It is complicated to explain, so hopefully you get the idea.

A-school leave.... At first, I was under the impression that they got a week leave after A-school.  My son graduates the end of August.  That is too close to the Christmas shut down.  He is now under the impression that he will get leave either right after Aschool or for Christmas, but not both.  I am hoping for Christmas.  He will probably find out for sure within a couple of weeks.

My son is also looking at buying a truck.  An insurance agent told me that the insurance has to follow both the WI (home state) insurance laws as well as the SC insurance laws.  We have a vehicle he could use, but same insurance agent suggested that it did not remain in our name.  If there would be any accidents, we are still legally tied to the vehicle.  If it is not in our name, there is no legal obligations.  Also according to 2 different insurance agents, he needs to be on his own policy because of the vehicle being kept in SC.  Geico was very nice to talk to me and give a ballpark estimate.  They were a little pushy at selling the policy.  He doesn't have a vehicle in SC yet, so there is no need for the policy.  I explained that we were looking at costs to see if it was going to happen or not.  My son called USAA.  For him, USAA offered cheaper insurance.   I guess each sailor needs to check out different companies for themselves.  THere are too many factors about rates.

For anyone wanting to learn a little more about submarines and life aboard, check out the series "Submarine: Hidden Hunter" on Netflix. It's only three epsiodes long. The first one was about the Virginia-Class subs, the second is concentrating on boomers, fast-attacks, and nuclear power. Have yet to watch the third.

Definitely informative and I've learned a ton of things I never knew!

thank you for the info, sounds like they stay busy.

Angel- my sailor is currently taking 3 classes for college credit (I think there are about 12-15 other nukes with him per class, some of whom have been in grad hold for a few months). That's every M-W-F. They PT on T-TH-F morning too. A lot of his shipmates are working at Patriot's Point. A couple are in FEP, which is a mandatory fitness and exercise program (2-3 hrs of working out + the T-TH-F am PT). For those taking classes, they have class til end of May.

Comment by NancyJo (NNPTC) on April 12, 2012 at 12:20pm

Connie, that sounds about right. My son graduated PSchool in June, and was on grad hold until mid-December. He moved up to BS in October about 2 mo. before Proto started for him.

BTW I shared the article about the re-designing of the training reactors with my navy nuke SIL who went on to become a nuclear engineer. He said he was part of the design team for that. Now my son is in training. Isn't it a small world?

what do they do during the time they are waiting to class up?
