Mine is grad hold at BS.  He was told to use up any days over XXX amount because once prototype starts he won't be able to take them and then will loose them. The GF is getting those days.  Lucky her!

juliebelle - mine got leave after A School, and Power School, PLUS I got to have him for 1 Thanksgiving and both Christmases.  1st Christmas was T Track so he only got 7 days instead of 2 week shutdown.  This past Christmas was just a fluke and he got 5 days, but that was ONLY because Christmas feel on his "off" weekend in Prototype and he was ahead of the curve.

A lot of it depends on where they are in the pipeline in relation to when was the last time they had leave.  So, if they get leave at Christmas and graduate A school in January or February, then leave after A School is unlikely.  Lots of variables.

Mine is supposed to get 10 days of leave after Prototype IF he get picked up for ELT (or so he's been told), if not on ELT pickup, then 30 days leave to get packed up and moved to his duty station.

I would think that they could take leave between Power School and Prototype if they're on a hold, not sure though cuz we went straight to Prototype, though we had two weeks to get there.  They definitely get leave before reporting to their first boat/ship, though it may get cut a little short if the ship is deploying right away.  Normally, though - they get to take a month at that point.

Connie - are you familiar with TSP, the Thrift Savings Program? You can google it if not, that is a way to defer up to 10% of their income from taxes, and the first 5% is matched,

Pamela, after son and his buds had some bad luck with Realtors in the area, he did find a spot and went through AHERN as well.  There are several complexes that are more than generous with the military "requirements".  My son and his buds are in a place called Ellsworth Commons. (http://ellsworthcommons.info/)  They have a multitude of options and they are willing to work with our Nukes.  The boys are loving the place.

Hi ladies, it's been a long time since I've been on here.  My son is leaving GC to go up to Ballston Spa on April 6th.  He has to report on the 13th.  So, he only has a short time to look for an apartment.  Does anyone have any suggestions on where we should be looking?  He definitely wants to live alone!  So a 1 bedroom apt. would be great.  Thanks for any help!

RE: taxes. My son mentioned something called the Savers Tax Credit; I googled it and see it's for people who put $ in a Roth IRA, etc. But he seems to think there's a credit like this solely for the military. Anybody know?

Connie, my guess re:Admiral Rickover is that the owner was a Navy Nuc (probably officer) who took a job at Los Alamos National Laboratory post-Navy and acquired a little spread.

It has been ages since I posted last!  I think the last time I was on here was in December!  It's just been a busy several months.

Anyway, TJL and J's Mom - I didn't go to A School Grad either.  My son graduated Nov. 18th.  He said the same thing - that it was no biggie.  He had a friend take pictures for me.  I was thankful for that!

The ceremony I want to attend is Power School.  Lord willing he will get thru this school and move on to Prototype.

He said as it stands right now graduation is scheduled for July 20th.  Hoping that is true and that we can start planning to attend.

Good to be back here.  Hoping I can catch up with what's going on.  I won't even attempt to go back and read - too much has gone by for that, although I did catch up on 11 pages of the above discussion regarding Class 1202.  Lots to read!

Have a great day!

J's Mom - thanks!  I worried that he would be the only one without family attending.  He talked like the guys would celebrate together.
