Good Morning Everyone!  I am looking for help of any kind for my son.  He graduates power school on Feb 3 and thought he was on grad hold in Goose Creek until April, however, he misread, misunderstood or something the paperwork he signed.  Apparently, from what I could get from him last night, he has to be in Ballston Spa by Feb 17th.  Not sure the start date for his prototype.  He had made plans to be there by April and was going to use Grad Hold in Goose Creek to take care of a few things like getting his driver's license (long story).  He did go to Chief and asked about getting orders changed, but Chief told him he could not do anything.  I don't know how the chain of command works, but he may not have wanted to do anything either.  I'm not sure.  So, we told our son to start making plans now to leave in Feb.  I told him to find a place to live first and that we would help him get there somehow.  The kicker is that he really needs that driver's license and a car.  He is pretty much stuck with these orders, right?  We told him to try to get them changed, but not if it is going to cause major issues with those in charge.  I told him things happen for a reason and we should just push forward.  He said he knows some  of the guys going up to Ballston Spa in Feb and I told him that housing was his first concern.  Hopefully, he will be able to hitch a ride back in forth to the base there until he is driving and has a car.  The good thing is that we recently moved back to Maine and will only be about a 5 hour drive from him instead of being in California. I don't want him to stress too much these last two weeks of power school.  I have heard that the power school comp exam is tough.   If anyone has any suggestions, or has a son or daughter leaving for Ballston Spa in February and might be able to help him out, I am sure he would be grateful for the assistance.  I, too, would be grateful for the help.  I did not sleep well last night worrying about his situation.  I know he has to figure it out, but I'm his mom and am just plain worried.  Oh, the navy has someone there at Goose Creek to help with the logistics of moving and all that is involved, right?  Thank you for listening!

Sherri, glad your son is doing well, I also hope you make it to graduation.

Johanns, I hope you find some other moms from the Missouri. My son is on the Seawolf and they have a group, however no one comments on it: ( . The boat has just recently got out of drydock so maybe that is why. This seems to be the best place for answers.

My son is on the USS MISSOURI, they deployed out of Groton.  He is the youngest on the boat by several years.  Is there anyone here that has a loved one on the same boat. This is his first deployment and I would love to be able to talk some other moms/wives/girlfriends who also have someone on the boat.

Hi moms!  How you all been?  Been a while for me, work in Dec was brutal, but slowing down now. 

I talked to my son last night, he's doing well.  He told me he graduates Mar 2!  I'm hoping to go, since I missed his A school in GC.  (for those of you who don't know, my son is now in P-cola in A school for IT)  He's doing good and loves IT.  He is taking the E5 test in March, so we shall see, he's excited to take it and is hoping to score well.

Regarding the Montgomery GI bill - it pays for more than just tuition after their discharge. They also get up to a max of $1000 annually for books, plus the real kicker - E-5 housing allowance (BAH) with dependents (whether they have any or not). In the Puget Sound region, the BAH comes to ~$1260 monthly - pretty sweet.

Here's a new topic: how much/in what are your sailors investing/saving out of their pay? I guess this mostly applies to the singles, not the marrieds, 'cause we all know how tough it is to sock $$ away when you have kids!  My son and I have been discussing what to do about this year's Roth IRA (he's allowed to do $5k); he also has auto deductions for the Thrift Savings Plan and a Navy Federal savings account. He's on grad hold waiting for prototype. Ideas? Advice?

My  son  was in  A  school with yours. He  was  told  he  will  be  starting class in  Feb.Yeah! Hope  yours  will  be  one  they  pick too.
