mn linda,  i will take any lead i can get , maybe sometimes in future you can mention this to them and i can get a contact?  I have heard of this in the past that northern cities help the south out but guess we have to get health certificates and such.  The problem we have is not having space to keep them safe while transport is worked on.

navynrocks, I don't know if it is possible, but Animal Humane Society here in Minneapolis gets 70% of their dogs from other shelters around the country -- mainly from down south.  maybe they could work out some arrangement to bring some of the dogs up here.

yup Connie we are an open admissions and EVERYTHING comes in, Horses,Goats,Pigs ugh ,i hate to see it b/c we are so overwhelmed here and not enough rescues coming, I have been involved w/shelter last 4 t years and it has been very hard, i had to back down a bit when i was diagnosed w/breast cancer and had major surgeries but am alwasy thinking of the animals.

We are striving for No Kill but our economy has plummneted since the Space Center-Shuttle program has been taken away.  I will never get how We send Man to the Moon here but have a outdated dump of a shelter non-condusive to our homeless animals and staff for that matter ,still kill thousands and thousands here.   If you were closer i'd send the farm animals to ya,lol

I pray each day it will get better and we will get more rescues involved and adoptions up,  I am also part of the No kill movement so not going to lose hope.

People come in dump there pets b/c they dont match there furniture and im not kidding i have been there on intake and heard it all..

Nancy Jo that is always wonderful to hear stories like yours and coming from my own Rescued Lab-Mastiff i pulled right out of the Kill room  these pets make the best family furry members ever and they are truly greatful that you saved there life.

So happy you all love your pets to and do what you can in your community.

Any of you have folks wanting to adopt and they live in Florida send them my way (or rescues lol)

Bless you all!

navynrocks, amen to spay/neuter ... and not just dogs & cats. Spent the morning helping my veterinarian castrate a ram, 250 pounds of horny (and I'm not referring to his head) beast. He was a "rescue sheep" that one of our friends took in, only to find that no fence could keep him away from her neighbor's ewes. Never a dull moment when it comes to animals!

My daughter has a rescue chihuahua/rat terrier mix from a backyard breeder in AL (we live in NE).  Evidently they bred her at every heat so she was always pregnant and now her tummy is kind of saggy even though she's only about 18 months old.  At first they said she was from a chihuahua breeder and yet she was 12 lbs.  Allison says they bred her with a purebred chi to get small dogs.  They were liars and cheats and I'm so glad my daughter has her now.  She is the sweetest most affectionate little girl.  Where most dogs chew and like to play little tug games, she just cuddles every toy she gets and acts like they are babies.  She'll take them into her kennel like she's putting them to bed.  I pray there are more happy endings for those poor dogs so mistreated.  God bless you mn linda for caring for those dogs.  You are a saint.

No kill shelters can pick and choose what animals they accept, but where I volunteer, they accept all animals no matter what condition.  They get hoarding and cruelty cases and sadly some animals just aren't able to be put up for adoption.

Comment by mn linda (nuke MM ELT Groton CT) on January 6, 2012 at 4:45pm

I have volunteered at our local humane society for almost 5 years working on the dog adoption floor helping dogs find their forever homes.  I absolutely love it. They do everything they can to get all animals adopted, but since they take in all surrenders, there are some that just aren't able to be adopted due to aggression or too ill to survive.  It is a large facility, so once an animal is on the adoption floor, the animal is there until adopted -- there isn't a time limit like at some shelters.

This past summer I have switched from working on the adoption floor to working with shy and scared dogs getting them more socialized so they can go to the adoption floor.

I actually adopted the one in my profile picture in October - Minnie - she was a puppy mill mama and I was assigned to work with her since she is so shy and scared.  Needless to say she never went to the adoption floor, I put on hold for me as soon as I saw her.  She's still very scared when people come to the house, but she is improving. She snapped at my husband a couple times at first because she was scared, but now she's comfortable with him.

Minnie is a parti yorkie -- which is a recessive gene coloring of the yorkshire terrier.

I hate to ask this but what is a kill shelter?  If it's what it sounds like, how do you bear it?

Comment by navynrocks (1201M) on January 6, 2012 at 4:24pm

2 things in Life i am passionate about and adore. My nuke son(&only child) hubby, ok thats 3  AND my passion for Animals and involvement with my local shelter-sadly a kill shelter.  Resolving to get more involved as a Foster and Volunteer-Rescue

Hope all you wonderful folks will do the same with your shelter as it truly is a rewarding endeavor and saves lives!

I like your New Year's Resolutions.  Mine is to spend less time on the internet -- I tend to be on here all day long -- I'm addicted.
