Praying in agreement with you MomofNuke.  Thank you God for clarity of thinking, for remembering the info taught, and for our Power School Nucs to test well tomorrow.  Thanks also for giving them restful sleep tonight. In the name of Jesus Christ.  Amen

Mine started briefings today, he is an ET, so don't know if he is in a different class then suebal's and TrevorsMom's.  He is in "don't tell mom everything mode" so I think I will wait to ask his class number.  They did post a pic in his blue cami's on FB,,,, I think he has been waiting to wear them ever since they were first issued!

Yes, thanks Mark. I appreciate it too.

TrevorsMom, my son found out today he's in class 1209B. They still have to meet their SLPO though. He's hoping that will be tomorrow--chomping at the bit to get goin. (hard to tell him to chill, especially when he's psyched to get started).

Thank you Mark. Now she can worry about one less thing. Appreciate  it much.

All nucs will eventually get a physical that qualifies them to receive exposure to the relatively low levels of radiation they get starting with the inhull portion of prototype and continuing through their career. The recruiter is right, it is nothing to worry about. The only thing different from any other occupational health physical is that  they will get a whole body scan, where sensitive radioactivity counting equipment will determine whether they are carrying around unusual amounts of radioactivity in their body. If they are carrying any, it would be called "internal contamination", and would deliver a constant level of radiation to whatever organ and neighboring tissue it is in. They should never be exposed to any internal contamination during their career; the point of the count is to establish their baseline level before they could be potentially exposed, so that the Navy can prove at the end of their career that they were never internally contaminated. This does not mean they should never be exposed to radiation, which is different from contamination. They will receive low levels of radiation that are generally less than workers in commercial nuclear power plants receive, and that will have no adverse health effects. I don't remember when they get this procedure done; but I don't think it's during boot camp. The count takes 5-10 minutes when it's done; all the countee has to do is stand still during it.

Comment by NavyMomLG on November 28, 2011 at 5:42pm

blackie123 - I don't recall that the Nukes were singled out for anything during bootcamp other than when it came to ratings.  My son never mentioned anything.  Based on my son's comments, the fear of BC is much worse than the actual experience.  That's easy to say once you are through it, but I would just try to reassure your daughter that she will be fine, and it will be over before you know it.  I would also suggest looking for the DEP group here, and then get in the PIR group too - they were invaluable to me as I went through BC.  Best of luck to both of you, you will be amazed how the time flies and how much support you will find on this site.  If your DEP and PIR groups aren't as active as you would like, feel free to just stay with us, we have all been there!

HOOYAH!!!  My son has been in GC since 11/5/11 and finally classed up today....class 1209A.  Anybody else with a nuke in class 1209A?

Comment by blackie123 on November 28, 2011 at 4:23pm

Supposedly she heard that they pull the Nukes out during boot camp and run additional tests. She asked the recruiter and all he said was don't worry about it. Don't know any more than that I'm afraid.

Blackie123...that's a interesting question. My son PIRd on 11/18 and is in Charleston right now. I had no idea there was a "special physical."  I'm really looking forward to whatever answer is posted. 8-)
