okay.  I'm starting a new event for the next Olympics.  It will be called "Cardio Nuke Moms Reading"...7 pages of speed reading to catch up.  Never a dull moment!  Thanks for your stories about mawwiage, and everything else.  We had a small rain storm in Memphis last night.  At least it's a little less humid today!  STAY COOL...

Thank you for your response TC. I think he did inquire about it once and was told that they didnt have it. He probably doesnt want to push too hard in fear of getting chewed out. I guess I just need to let it go and hope that some other sailor got to enjoy it. I'm ok with that.

Dont speak so quick to say it's cooler in BS. At 830am, heat already felt like 95 and it doesn't look to be letting up any day soon. On average, yes, much cooler here in NY.

Jacob's class is the largest they've ever pushed through here in NY. I think there's more being pushed through in general here and in GC. They just don't know where to put them! Grad hold was 2 months for my EM and some of his friends got 4 months hold in NY and others 2 months in GC, 2 months in NY. Though to be honest, grad hold was AWESOME! Of course, we're not in too much of a hurry to get to the ship either ;)

Correct me if I'm wrong but I want to say there's more reactors/training ability here in NY than GC? I do know that housing on base (while it is a small base) is absolutely FULL. A class will be graduating soon but half of the married housing section is instructors who probably won't be moving anytime soon. However, if you do want to know more about base housing I'd be happy to be a little salesgirl :) It's sooooo awesome and affordable since EVERYTHING is included in rent (and during winter, heating bills might get to half of BAH alone)

As far as things to do in the area? LOTS!!!! way more than GC I feel. Especially for underage sailors, though they still might have the problem of all their older friends wanting to hit one of the many bars in downtown Saratoga and surrounding areas.

Horse racing just started today!, 2 six flags within a day trip's drive, a lake with good beaches from what I hear, mini golf, Boston/NYC also in a day trip's drive (though you'd probably want to stay the night there), Sporting events, private colleges (i.e. their different college events open to the public like sports), malls larger than you can imagine, and much more!

Hi All, I mailed a package (Priority in a 12x12 box) of snacks & goodies to my grandson on Jul 12. The Delivery Confirmation stated that it arrived at GC on July 13. I put mistakenly "Indoctringation" instead of his class # in the address. He still has not received it. What to do? He has very little time to track it down due to heavy study hours. I've probably got $50 plus in the pkg. If another sailor got it, I could live with that but if it's just sitting in a corner somewhere, I'm not happy about it. Any suggestions??? I don't want to overstep my bounds by making phone calls to the base. Don't want to take a chance on anyone giving our sailor a hard time. They are already under enough stress. Should I just let it go?

Thank you all so much for your responses and help!

We will give our son his cell phone at the airport before he flies out after PIR, so no problem with that or with having to mail anything to him (right away at least) since we will be taking all his stuff to him in GC.  I appreciate the info about shipping things, though, and have definitely noted it for future reference!

DramaboysMom, to answer your question, I live quite a long way from GC, in southern California.

We are driving to GL for PIR and then to GC, among other destinations, sometime before returning home by August 25th.  Based on that and what you good folks have shared, I'm thinking I should look at planning our visit to GC for around Aug. 12th (after my son's first week there), to include the weekend and up to a few days before/after if he wants us to.  I have enough discretionary time and flexibility to give him the option of deciding when and how long or short a time we should spend there.

That leads me to another question (sorry, one of many more to come, I dare say)... Do you know if, during his first week there, my son would be able to make arrangements for us to stay at the Foster Creek Villas on base?

Thanks again for the info and suggestions!  I really do look forward to getting to know all of you and meeting many others here on NUKE moms.  :D

Just catching up with all.  Grad-hold job is "roving watch" of the parking lot.  When the black flag goes up it is watching movies and just hanging out.  He said he keeps cases of H2O in his truck so when they rove that way can get a couple of bottles.

He was told would probably be in Balton Spa after grad-hold; looking forward to cooler weather.  I said you just ensured you'll be in GC.

Never thought I'd hear it, but he is looking forward to getting back to learning and moving toward the future.  Parking lots are not exciting places.

Have a great night, all.

Weather is really wacky, just got back from our company's weekly softball game.  Wore a sweatshirt and was still cold!  Live in a coastal town and most of the summer is very cool at night.  Right now we are at 72 and probably never made it past 75 during the day.   The other side of the freeway, temperatures start to climb.  Live and work in the same town, so I miss hot weather.

J's mom I refused to take my son's car to him before he would be able to drive it. If you can wait until the week before you have to move, you could have all the paperwork completed, tune-up, registration up to date etc. My son's drivers license had expired while in BC and he had to go through lots of loops and hoops to get the State of Texas to renew it while his is living in SC... make sure that if the car is in his name he is prepared to re-register it in SC, so don't update for your state! If the car is in parents name, make sure everything is current! He will need a copy of the registration and an insurance card to get the parking permit for his car. He will not be allowed to drive it until he phases up and gets permission to drive it! It was two days after I delivered the car before my son finally got his parking permit and two more weeks before he got permission to drive it off base. His updated drivers license arrived two weeks after that, but he was allowed to use the combination of his TDL & his military badge if he had been stopped they would have not done anything since everything about the car is up to date. Since the car is under his Dad's name, we don't have to get SC plates!  I would wait two to three weeks before going to see him. If he is still in indoc that would give you longer visiting time, but there really isn't many places on base to visit... the weekends he is allowed to leave unless he has responsibilities/jobs/watch. My son had three different jobs during indoc weeks. His indoc lasted four weeks. I took his car to him around week 6 of school and it was a tough week, lots of study hours and so I didn't see him but 6 hours on Saturday, Sunday and then after classes on Monday to drop off the car... he wasn't allowed to leave the base that afternoon because of heavy study hours. I hated saying good-bye. Don't go alone! It was awful!

When ours went, I waited to send his phone. We got him some phone cards, and told him to wait a few days before he called so he could get the lay of the land and let us know what he wanted us to send him.  This worked for us, as he wanted a few extra things ( clothes, flip flops, beach towel, electric razor, spare glasses, lounge pants,  and a sleeping bag.= the sleeping bag is what he sleeps on ontop of his bed so he doesn't have to change his sheets as often and can make his bed quickly)

Our son was 22, and had finished the college route, so daily communication wasn't something we had done for a looonnnng time!

You will gain a lot of wisdom from a lot of the mom's, girlfriends, and wives on this list!  And you will gain a lot of friends that hopefully someday you will be able to meet. ( Right, Michimom?)

How far away do you live from GC? maybe consider a Labor Day weekend visit instead.

Comment by Emily-aaronsgirl11 on July 21, 2011 at 11:35pm
You'd be able to spend time with him on the weeknights, most likely after four pm. But he'd have to stay on base. On weekends he could go off base with a curfew of midnight. :)
