My son looked into the eye surgery, and according to him, you have to be on shore duty, and have orders to be at that duty station for a minimum of six months. He also said that there is generally an insanely long waiting list for it that effectively means it won't happen until they go to shore duty after the first tour of sea duty. It's also a different procedure than Lasik; think it's the procedure referred to as PRK, because it doesn't shave the cornea like lasik, but cuts small slits.

Wow, I'm gone only a little while, but missed so much!

Elizabeth, I love your comment about tossing things.  I knew I couldn't be the only one who tosses stuff so her hubby doesn't see.  He saves everything like he's been through the Depression, but of course he's not old enough for that!

Love the pic, Jeanne!

I sometimes wish I could get eye surgery, but my eye doc says I'm not a candidate.  Oh, well, at least I can see with glasses!  And my poor son has inherited bad vision, too.  I know he would love contacts--he has eyelashes any female would kill for (long, thick and lush!), but you can't see them so well behind those glasses.

Sheri- if your soon to be DIL is looking for support, ask her if she would like to add Emily or I on Facebook and we can private message you our names. We both love meeting new Navy SO's. :D

my son was told that the Navy would pay for Lasik, so he was planning on having it done sometime before prototype.  was that just a recruiter telling him something he wanted to hear????  my DH and I both had our eyes done and it's wonderful.  We put money into the health flex plan to pay for it -- so had appt to see if we were candidates to have it done before the end of the year to put the money away the next year to cover the cost.
Comment by Sherri_M on April 7, 2011 at 5:54pm

I would love to have the lasik, and I think my son would do it too..i'll have to mention it to him...I know our insurance covers it..or part of it at least so definately check your coverage!

As for the government shutdown...it's just ridiculouos!  Dumb law makers...I'm so aggravated..and it doesn't affect me, just family and friends!  But to think they'd let America go into shutdown sends a great message world wide!  With all the conflicts and wars going on..not a smart idea, not just cause of the military having to report without getting paid, but America on hold..hmm..let's re-think this please!!  Dumb law makers!

Anyway, on what I guess is a much brighter note...Michael went and bought a mounting for an engagement ring for his girl...I had a diamond and told him he could get it remounted if he was bound and determined to do this...much cheaper than buying a ring....so we took it to our small town jeweler and they are overnighting the mounting and it will be ready for him on Saturday morning....that just happens to be his and the gf's 1 year anniverisary..so he's popping the question that night at dinner, so I guess as of Saturday night he'll be officially engaged!  I'm happy, but not as they are both 18...but I am also bound and determined to stand by them and give them all the support I can if they decide to get married after power school--as is the plan right now..

Thanks Mary! I think I'm going to have to wait anyways because my eyesight is still changing. My professor told me that if I can't get any help from insurance to go to Canada like she did because it's only 500 instead of 1500 or so

my3sons- do you know if the one Lasik procedure can be passed to a spouse? Jacob talked about giving his to me since my eyesight is bad and this past year my eyes decided to start rejecting contacts. If not, I'll probably go to Canada and do it.
