elizabeth, sorry, but my son hasn't started power school yet.  His A school grad is 1/28, and we're thinking his power school will start the first week of March.

But please report on what you're hearing about power school, since we're right behind you!

This weekend on Friday my son graduates A school and I'm wondering about getting to the actual building where the event will take place.  Does the base have well marked signs on graduation day as to where we need to go?  When I spoke to my son, he didn't seem to know a whole lot other than the time.  Any info. ya'll could share would be great!  Happy Monday all.

Regarding the question of whether nucs going to NY for prototype are likely destined for carrier duty - the answer is that where they go for prototype as absolutely zero to do with whether they will be carrier or subs. They will go wherever they are needed based on open spots in the fleet as their class is finishing proto, whether they are a sub volunteer or not, their preference choice(s) and class standing.

thanks so much -- I like knowing a little about the area -- I did the same before he went to GL and then GC.

Diane MM Mom,

Understand the 'vacations'. Mine have been, PIR July '09, drove his car to him Feb '10 for A School graduation then Sept '10 for Power School graduation. Next will be Prototype grad help him clean apt. and drive with him to new assignment which will hopefuly be back to west coast. No grand kids yet but with 3 sons I'm sure they will be in future.

Dor, my husband and I had discussed that all our vacations were going to be going to visit our sailor for the next couple of years and we only have one!  Cannot imagine trying to keep up with three.  We are also juggling a daughter who is due to deliver our third grandchild the end of April and trying to make trips to see her.  Grandkids change so much in just a couple of weeks, not to mention months!

Dana, it's not silly. Or if it is, I'm right there with ya. :) I too want to know all I can, makes me feel closer somehow.

My son has described the plant to be set up like on a carrier or sub. While the school in Goose creek is on a sub in the river these are land based. You can also see the subs in the river on map quest (satelite). You can see a dot in the river that my sons is postive is a bid gun on a boat to stop boats, jets skis etc. from the area. It was cool to see, but then it doesn't take much to impress me, and I love to know ( hence my being on this site) and to gain as much understanding and knowledge about what my son is experienceing as possible.

mm linda,

If you go to your favorite map source like Map Quest and key in 26 Quiet Harbor Drive, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866 you will see what passes as a 'Base' in Saratoga Springs. They also have a web site and news letter and are on facebook. That loop is the singles housing and to the right is Bay Drive and Dolphin Terrace which is the married housing. The area below the married housing is where there is a Nex, Commisary and ITT office. It's all fenced off but you only need to pass a guard gate into the Nex area. The housing is open as it it in Goose Creek.

If you key in 350 Atomic Project Road, West Milton, NY 12020 that will give you the general area of the NPTU. When you get the map image click on Satelite image and you will see the buildings etc. If the address is off a litle follow the road to the left (west). There isn't anything or very little around it, can't miss it.

Do love Map,Quest or others and the Satelite available images. Had them for Boot Camp and A School. Could see the BEQ building he was housed in, the school building etc. so when he called I had an image in my mind and not a blank slate. Silly, but made me feel closer.
