Hello Casey. Different sailor, different story, different day. My sailor says that if they do fleet duty while waiting for prototype they are assigned non-nuke tasks within their rate (MM, EM, ET). There is no way they can serve in a nuke capacity in the fleet until after they have completed prototype at GC or BS.
My personal opinion is if they can get any practical experience before starting prototype it is better than taking college classes or spending their day cleaning barracks or doing clerical work (while living off base?) for 6 months.

Diego told me he will get his "rate" when he is in BC. He explained a few things to me and I am starting to understand some things. It takes me a bit sometimes, I get "Fibro" fog and have memory problems. Bear with me. Thanks!

Mrs. Andy, What a fun idea for a girls weekend! My mom, my 2 sisters and I did that a couple of years ago and had the BEST time. That phone number is the home land line. Talk to you soon. Pat

Hi Mrs. Andy, How's your sailor doing? You are going to be in Chicago in August? Maybe we can get together. That is about the time my sailor will be home before reporting to his first duty station. Considering how many plans he already has during that time, I told my husband we would be lucky to work in a lunch!!!!! Do you still have my phone number? If not, I can PM it to you. And HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!!!! Pat

Thanks Casey, that helps me. I will see if Diego has been told anything from his recruiters. He can't make the weekly DEP meetings due to playing baseball, so he leaves school early one day a month to fill out his paperwork that he has to and to chat with the recruiter. It usually goes well and he goes back to school and baseball. I am not sure which "rate" he would like at this moment, or what the Navy "needs" are...........we shall see.

Thanks too, Navytwo............you are a heap of helpful information. I did 20 years in the medical field, retired 13 years ago from cardiology. So much has changed........was just in the ER last night with our second son who we thought fractured his clavicle, though the X-rays didn't show any. He is in a lot of pain, on pain meds and wearing a shoulder strap which helps. No ball for him for a bit, he is on JV ball and Diego plays Varsity. Anyway, thanks and keep it coming!

Casey- You're right :) In his letter from bootcamp he said he wanted EM or ET because MM just sounded like a lot of bitch work. I had to bite my tongue to tell him that anything he does in the military is probably going to be that way :) I'm pretty sure he's EM, though. (My brother is an MT so I always get confused. Why does there have to be so many different combinations of letters!?) :)

Thanks for the correction on Machinist Mate that is what I meant to type. ASVAB stands for Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery. That is a mouthful. When my sons were interested in the Navy they got a book with examples of test questions and I looked at them. I think I will stick to Nursing. When my sons have been on hold they have learned some valuable skills when they become home owners. It is always a reality check for us non-military folks. Thanks for all you input.

My sailor will graduate from power school next February. He says he was told there is an expected 18 month wait for prototype and he may have fleet duty for 6 months. GC is such a rumor mill. The enlisted have their rumors. The chiefs have their rumors. Who knows what is really going to happen?

Navytwo, Thanks, I will have to ask Diego what he is then. We have never talked about that.

ET2Shelli, Thanks so much. This helps alot!!!

ET2 Shelli thanks for the valuable information. This is all new to me but, I am interested. I have come a long way from wondering what ASVAB stood for. Thanks for your support.
An MM is a Mechanist Mate, ET is an Electrical Technician, and an EM is an Electrician Mate. I think that the MM has indepth knowldge on the heating/boiler components, and ET works on the computer elements and an EM works on the electircial components. My son found out in boot camp what he was selected to to do. His recruiters went over the information with him.
