Chipmunk - so glad you have closed on the house! I hope you can rest this weekend before heading to graduation.

The Hammer - so happy you were able to spend time with your sailor :)

Jen - our sailor's "creature comforts" were his juggling balls, MP3 player and a couple of books (besides running shoes, underwear, laptop)

My daughter would frequently walk to the Walmart and the big NEX with her friends.  She also told me that it was pretty easy to catch a ride to the mall with others.  Once she had her own car she would take other sailors to the mall or shopping in turn.  Seems like for the most part they all try to help each other out.

There's a Subway on base, too, if you want to do a Subway gift card. Walmart is really close to the base and there is a little NEX close to the dorms and a larger NEX near the base entrance. Our sailor actually said there were better deals at the malls for things like running shoes, etc if they used their military discount.  I think his first big purchase after they received their first bonus was a really nice watch.  As any FYI we just got our sailor the noise cancelling Bose earphones as he awaits his orders and he is THRILLED.  I worried a bit, but he said it was just great! Happy Friday and Bravo Zulu to today's graduates.

Scram - welcome to the group, I think you joined while I have been preoccupied, thanks for chiming in and sharing!

For those following my estate saga - the house is officially closed!! (well except for the mound of wood in the garage and refrigerator we have promised to help remove.) I have another sale this weekend at a friend's house (she helped me and I took stuff there, but I am done at the moment) I just want to focus on getting to my sailor's PS graduation and hopefully some time with him.

Thank you again to everyone for your prayer's and encouragement! - I have actually slept for more than 6 hours the last two nights but my body is reminding me that I am not even as young as I was 3 years ago when I did this with my parent's house.

RED SHIRT DAY~

Last Friday at TKD belt testing I actually missed my son's first kick break because I noticed the lady sitting next to me had a we wear RED shirt on!! I had not seen one that actually said that. It was neat to meet someone else who knew what RED shirt day meant.

Jen, My son did not mention anything about needing/buying a calculator so I wouldn't worry about that. You can get an online NEX card for your sailor.

Comment by Mona on October 19, 2018 at 8:23am

The Hammer, I think my husband and I were sitting right behind you at graduation. We also were on the plane ride from Chicago to Charleston that got delayed for so long due to the pilot smelling gas. Happy to be home spending quality time with my sailor. Family dinner scheduled for tomorrow, then he’s headed back until Dec. 28th. I think we are going to wait to have Christmas with him when he gets back home.

3 B'smom - thanks!

Jen - I agree, your sailor will surprise you. Some things may have changed with the BEQ room assignment shift, but there are generally "veteran" sailors in your son's BEQ or possibly his roommate that will be able to assist them.

If you really want to pay for his cleaning supplies and school supplies, I would check at the NEX at RTC when there for PIR and make sure it works at all of the NEXs. I don't know as I didn't buy one. My son only now has a lot of extra expenses so paying for his own supplies was his first entry into the cost of living on your own.

And the calculator is a specific model. I didn't order it until I knew for sure. They keep them stocked but they also run out quickly and that is usually found at what my son calls the larger NEX which is not fairly close to their BEQ's.

I will bump my A School discussion back to the front, it is a good read through. I shared things from my son's perspective as he went through A school last year. Not so much with Power School - mostly it is just a lot more intensive studying.

The Hammer - WOW - it just seems like yesterday you were sharing on BCMom the flowers you received from your son after he left for BC. Tell him Congratulations!!!

Jen -

I don’t know if I would worry about the calculator. They are very specific on what they can use - down to the exact model. I think you will be surprised at your sailor’s self- sufficiency. They are more than able to take care of what they need on their own.

And Chipmunk, I do believe you are right about the Walmart
