Yup, the only reason we know what our son's room looks like is through Skype.  He was so funny--carried his laptop around the room so we could see everything.

OK, NavyMomLG - What is a Bueller text?  I can't be the only one who doesn't know.

Connie foaling lady

I stayed at the Econolodge in North Charleston over Memorial weekend, $60 night (not bad for weekend/holiday rate).  Room was nice, breakfast good & the staff was very accomodating..this is about 15-20 min from base.

For Power School grad in Sept my husband & I stayed at the Wingate, very nice, about $80 a night.  This was further from the base.

NavymomLG- If you have a webcam and so does he, you can download Skype for free at http://www.skype.com/intl/en-us/home

This is really the only reason why I know what Aaron's room looks like... The rooms they stay in during Power School are much bigger than the barracks during A school. Like Connie said, no more bunk beds. :)

Well, the Bueller text worked - he did move into a new room yesterday.  He is in a single now, but I guess that could still change.  He also just got his six boxes of GS cookies, and said they made it in one piece.  I sure wish they had floor plans of the housing, like they do for college dorms.  It drives me crazy that I can't see where he is living!  He, too, is a man of few words, but seems to share more when we text than when we talk.

NavyMomLG, I think the only reason my son is texting me back so promptly is 'cause I'm gathering up his stuff for my husband to take down to GC (baseball glove, etc) and so he's texting back yes/no. Man of few words, I guess. Meanwhile, just found out he WILL have a roommate after all, but room is bigger and it's not bunk beds, yay.

Thanks for all of the great ideas about cars.  My son bought one of our cars from us when he got his license, so he has owned a car in the past, but we sold it when he left for BC.  He has mentioned that he is starting to look a little, so the insurance information is very helpful.  Connie - I was interested to hear that your son has moved - my son will be in the same Power School class, and I haven't received any responses to my texts of the past few days.  I just sent the "Bueller" text - that usually gets a response :)  Maybe he has moved as well, which probably adds to their already busy schedule.

Yes, my son has a buddy who is a motor head too, lol.  He's been going and helping that friend work on his car, which is amazing in itself.  He never wanted anything to do with caring for it the last 4 years.  Dad had to do it all (Dad's fault really, I tried).

If you make a copy of the notebook to keep with you, you can then bug him down the road to check mileage and all to see if he needs an oil change, etc.  They are still learning so a little extra help doesn't hurt.

Comment by Connie foaling-lady (Groton) on February 23, 2011 at 2:51pm
Kat, that's a good idea, about the notebook. My son's a vehicle newbie, so his 98 Ranger will be all greek to him ... luckily one of his nuke buddies is a motorhead (do they still use that term? I'm showing my age!)
Comment by Kat (MM Nuke) on February 23, 2011 at 2:44pm
Good news is that my son finally told me last week that he plans on keeping his 1997 Ford Ranger until it dies, so he is being smart about something.  It's paid off, dad just put it in the shop last week to get the front end alignment replaced, dad put new brakes on the front for him, and two new tires recently.  Of course my daughter and I are driving it back there at the end of March so it better be in good shape.  We even made him up a little notebook telling him the dates and mileage that each repair was done: oil change, new tires, new brakes, etc., so he has a good record to know when the oil needs to be changed next time.  Only problem now is he's talking about spending some of that bonus on a big sound system.  UGH.  oh well, I guess he's earned it.

Here's a Days Inn in Goose Creek: http://www.daysinn.com/DaysInn/control/Booking/property_info?proper...

We stayed at the Sleep Inn in North Charleston last summer.. It was about 70 a night, and pretty decent quality.

... In my opinion, North Charleston is a little bit.. Safer... than off base in Goose Creek. He can always check out the Villas if he wants super close.. A two bedroom is 60 a night.
