sjmom - We're traveling from WI to GC for Thanksgiving (driving). Will be following the comments for the same recommendations. We ended up getting McDonald's last year because of poor planning lol.

Our son really wanted us to come from Iowa to South Carolina for Thanksgiving, so we are going (it cost an arm and a leg) because he really wanted us there. Any suggestions for restaurants for Thanksgiving dinner?

My husband found this information about Fleet Week in Norfolk, VA if anyone is in the area. I have heard some of you talk about Fleet Week, now I understand what it might entail.

Potterycat - Hugs!!!  As for Christmas leave, that is all going to depend on a lot of things. When my son was at A school they had a two week stand down at Christmas. What that meant though, was he either had to leave for the two weeks (and those that did not have enough time built up, borrowed leave) or they had to stay at NNPTC to help stand watches. It all just depends and the scenarios can change. Flexibility is the key.

Potterycat, I agree with The Hammer, you will hear from her, just maybe not when you want.  I was surprised by how frequently my daughter called me while at BC.  She also sent lots of letters and my child is NOT a letter writer.  As The Hammer said, you should always keep your phone at hand.  Mine sat by the shower, near the bed, was always in my pocket with the ringer ON, even at church. All my friends understood.  I missed one call because I dropped the phone and went into a dead panic.  Much to  my surprise she called back about 15 minutes later.  When I didn't answer, she called her boyfriend then called me back so all was not lost.

She'll learn more about her Christmas options after she arrives at GC.  It will depend on her class schedule but it seems like most of them make it home either the week before or the week after Christmas.

potterycat - Welcome to the beginning of the journey! You will hear from your daughter a few times in the coming weeks... so keep your phone handy. Now that I am on the other side of BC (my son is in Prototype), the best advice that I would share is to remember that it is only 8-10 weeks... and afterwards, you will be able to talk to her more frequently and regularly. Stay strong Momma and buckle up!

Hi All,

My daughter is at MEPs today.  I'm going to see her for the last time before BC.  I don't know how I'm going to deal with not being able to talk with her for 2 months.  I'm trying SOOOO hard to keep it together.  I'm questioning myself and my decision to encourage her to go this route but I know she'll be set up for success if all goes well.

I'm hoping she'll be able to come home for xmas.  Do you have any thoughts about that?

Anyhow - hard days ahead.
