While there, complete your Profile so you can post and share photos and videos of your Sailor and share stories with other moms!

Join groups! Browse for groups for your PIR date, your sailor's occupational specialty, "A" school, assigned ship, homeport city, your own city or state, and a myriad of other interests. Jump in and introduce yourself! Start making friends that can last a lifetime.

OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

**UPDATE as of 11/10/2022 PIR vaccination is no longer required.

In light of observed changes and impact of the Coronavirus Delta Variant and out of an abundance of caution for our recruits, Sailors, staff, and guests, Recruit Training Command is restricting Pass-in-Review (recruit graduation) to ONLY fully immunized guests (14-days post final COVID vaccination dose).

As for WiFi - there is some limited WiFi, I think, in the Bowman Center and at least maybe the lounge area of the BEQ that my son was in. He use to get up early on Saturday morning and sit with his earplugs in and skype with us.

Some of the sailors also get WiFi and some use to make the roommates help pay for it. I think my son's 1st roommate had WiFi, but did not ask him to pay for it. It just depends.

It is my favorite time of the year- Fall and football. Time for jeans and sweaters, walking the dogs when the sun is out, and Sundays by the tv rooting on one of a few teams.

I once again have an odd question. At GC BEH or other places on the base do they have wifi? I have the opportunity to get a great deal on an Ipad but not sure if I need to get the cell version or just the wifi one. I know this seems odd but security and access could be an issue. His phone does not have the hot spot option.

Just over 2 weeks of boot camp left and then GC bound for him.

In addition to Excelsior College there's also Old Dominion College and Thomas Edison State College. Both work with the Navy on credits from the nuke program.

Semi related, my wife did her masters in nursing online through Excelsior several years ago. It checked the box for her career path.

I don't recall the name of the online program, but I have a message out to find out and I'll follow up. Several of his nuke buddies are doing it together. My understanding is that the credits go toward a Nuclear Engineering Technologies degree, distinct from Nuclear Engineering. I'm not sure how that translates into advancement into a graduate program or a better paying job post-Navy, but I figure it is at least a stepping stone to something else. Definitely can't hurt. My son spent a year and a half "enjoying" college life at Texas Tech studying (I use that term loosely) political science before enlisting. He said that he couldn't see himself in a traditional 9-5 job and wanted to see the world. Now he's on a sub so go figure. But in any event, with AP credits and his Tech hours with whatever Navy credits he gets, he should be well on his way to a degree. I will update everyone later . . .
