And yes your son will go to Goose Creek after BC. I highly recommend that you plan on Power school graduation. It is the big one. I went to Charleston rented a mother in law cottage for a week. We had a blast and I was there for the I PASSED call and went out to eat with about 5 of his friends. It was so exciting and I sure enjoyed a couple of evenings with these bright witty young sailors.

With My son we got to go to the gate with him. FYI anytime they come home on leave, you can get a get a military pass to go through security and wait at the gate with your sailor. As it turned out he had a afternoon flight and then the plane had mechanical trouble so was delayed toll about 5pm!!

NancyJo - Midway does have a USO and parents can get a pass back - it's beyond security.  In our case, our daughter's flight was so early that they just processed her through security and to the gate.  My husband just happened to be flying out on the same flight to Atlanta so he went back with her and sat at the gate.  I went back to the hotel and slept to get ready for my long drive home with our older daughter.

They were really good about explaining everything to us at the airport and telling us what was needed to go through security with our sailors.  There were a lot of anxious parents hanging around and the gentleman who was "herding" them addressed us and went way above the call of duty to make us feel comfortable with it all.  I wish I remembered his name so I could thank him.

Unless they have changed things you will get the whole day of PIR with your sailor before they fly out and as to when they will fly out, it's anybody's guess. Flights are staggered all day Saturday and while most are out of O'Hare, as JayDee experienced, some do fly out of Midway. You just can't predict. There have also been the rare occasion when your sailor will fly out on Sunday but really don't count on that. All nukes go to Goose Creek for training. Also, you can't predict when the bus will leave RTC for the airport. Most are very early.

As far as spending any time on Saturday with your sailor, make use of the USO at O'Hare. (I don't know anything about Midway's facilities.) It's a fantastic USO and many sailors can grab some sleep there or use it as a rendezvous point with their families. Also, last I heard you can request a gate pass to see your sailor off. I wish I had known that. It's precious time with your child before they board that plane.

For my sailor, he was so concerned about getting back before curfew on Friday, instead of 8:00 we had to have him back by 7:00. The navy really drums that kind of responsibility into them. Seems like not so long ago to me but May 12 will be 6 yrs since I dropped him off at MEPS. So much has happened since then. When somebody called it a rollercoaster they weren't whistling dixie.

gfmmom - yes our experience last October was very similar.  We had our daughter all day after the ceremonies, then back at base at 8:00.  We met her at the airport at 2:00 am and stayed with her until her flight left at 6:30 am.  Only difference is that her group flew out of Midway (long drive from our hotel near Great Lakes).

I will mention this, someone thought it would be funny to tell her and another young lady that they had watch at 4:00 and had to return to base at that time.  So we rushed through our brunch and time together to get her back. After we'd dropped her off we puttered in the NEX then headed back to our hotel until she was done at 6:00.  Right after we pulled off the base she called and asked us to come back and get her.  They had been pulling a prank on the girls.  Unfortunately it took time away from us, but I'm told that it's not an uncommon "prank".

Proud momma, the moral of that story is they have to report even if you think it's a prank, but linger on the base just in case.  :)
