Not meant to be rubbing it in, but guess who is back home already. He just missed the indoc class so probably has 3 weeks till that starts up, then 3 weeks of indoc which doesn't sound like they do much there either. I hope he doesn't get to bored, but it is nice having him home so often. I guess a nice break after 2 years of schooling.

Glad some ships have returned home, and hope some mamas atleast get some face time or phone calls.

Hi all - Happy Friday!

Got a text from my sailor yesterday and their ship is back from their underway ;-)  He was going home to his apt for a good nights rest & had to be back at the ship today, but said he would call Saturday....can't wait to hear how things went.  Wondering how soon they will leave again - last time they were only in for a day and a half and then back out to sea.

Yesterday I had to take my mom to the eye Dr.  She was having some problems (for about 2 days) & they were going to have to dilate her eyes so she needed me to drive her.  Well, 2 eye drs and a retina specialist later they decided she had a tear of the "something something" and a partially detached retina and they had to do surgery right away!  They even let me stay in the room while they did this (Kaiser).  Very interesting procedure - then she had to stay in a forward/prone position for an hour and then she had to sleep sitting up with her head tilted to the right - something about so the "bubble" that they put in her eye stays in place and "takes" so to speak.  They said if she had waited much longer her retina would have completely detached and then there is the worry of blindness. She has a number of follow-ups with the retina specialist but thank goodness it all seems ok so far.  Please say an extra prayer for her - she's been through a lot lately....

Co-twin - please be careful out there - mother nature can be tough sometimes!  Don't mess with her!

NancyJo - ahhhh sorry your son wasn't able to get off the ship in a timely manner.  Yep, I'll bet your DIL was steamed. Hopefully she and the kids didn't have to stand out there waiting too long!

COTwin, it seems to me you guys don't get many tornados. I live in Tornado Alley so we take our sirens seriously. I've seen too many towns destroyed. My cousin lost his entire farm. Flattened. Nothing left. His family survived in the storm cellar.

Having said that, I have a fond memory as a child of all of us (I have 8 siblings) crammed into the cellar and my dad sticking his head out to see what was what while my mother yelled, "Walter, get back in here!" LOL

CO-twin, because, of course, storm cellars are for wimps! Be careful out there.

WellMy nuke is under the sea. Been singing Sponge Bob. Hope he is not getting sea sick. Will be looking forward to stories of his first time out on his boat. He said he starts over with Quals for dolphins for Subs. He said he will be getting yelled at a lot, but found out CO's favorite items and stocked up ahead of time to smooth things over.

No FB messages from his twin, means they must be done traveling and are down to brass tacks and are in mission mode.

Wild weather here. A first for me, tornado sirens going off. What do all the neighbors do??? they all go stand in the street to try to spot one. LOL

I only know about SD. I believe they show all ships when they return to harbor after being out. They shut off the camera as the ship approached the pier so I will have to rely on photos taken by others.

My DIL said my son did not get his patches for his new rate sewn on in a timely fashion so was not able to leave the ship with everyone else. I guess you cannot wear the old stuff once you earn the new. He has to wait til this afternoon when he will be able to leave in his jeans. My DIL was a little steamed.

NancyJo - I hope they got it back up & you were able to see the ship!!  Do they also do live webcam of the ship when it's actually docked or just when it's coming in?

I wonder if they do the webcam when they return from an underway too, or is it just when they return from deployment?  I would love to be able to watch this - anyone know about Norfolk?

Comment by NancyJo (NNPTC) on June 4, 2015 at 1:42pm

It is up all the time. You can't see the ship any more. They shut it off I think. <sigh> But it was good while it lasted.

Comment by Mark on June 4, 2015 at 1:25pm

If you know the day, you can usually accurately estimate the timing of a ship leaving or entering port by googling the local tides.  Both entering and leaving port is normally timed to happen at high tide, to minimize the possibility of running aground.  I note high tide in SD today is just before noon, so it makes sense that the Vinson would be just off Cabrillo around 10.
