Welcome Marixi - you've been given some good advice here. Take things one day at a time and soon BC will be behind you and your son will start his journey in the nuke pipeline. It is definitely a roller coaster ride! Be sure to read the pages to the right (under the member profiles) as there is lots of good info there. And I agree with NancyJo - 30% graduation rate seems awfully low....
Good to see you back BoyWonderMom! Ohhh, vacation in Puerto Rico - sounds fabulous.
Sierrascrapper - a street band sounds like fun!
William - the beach pictures look amazing - going to be hard for you to go home LOL.
Yesterday we went with sailor to San Diego - had lunch at El Indio (on India street). He had seen this place on Diners, Drive-ins & Dives - taquitos is their specialty. Yummy place! Then we walked around Old Towne for a couple of hours. Had a really nice time - weather was great. My hubby & my mom went too - just were missing college son but he had class and track practice and couldn't miss them :(
Next week sailor leaves - all of a sudden the time is going too quickly. Nooooo, slow it down please! He finally heard from his ship sponsor so he is feeling better about that - knows when/where to report and what uniform to wear LOL! I guess the Truman is in Portsmouth now (he originally thought it was in Norfolk) and they are looking at an apartment in VA Beach but it should still be ok (the Portsmouth location is general knowledge so no OPSEC violation by me stating that). He's excited to start the next phase of his Navy career so that makes me happy.
Marixi - My son was a tall nerdy type guy who was never very physically active. BC changed that. By the end of BC, he told me that he actually enjoys running now. It's crazy the way BC will evolve them.
Goose Creek was a challenge for him to not procrastinate on studying. So he studied hard and still had the occasional weekend to go paintballing or movie watching with his new friends from class. Time management is critical.
Good luck!
Welcome, Marixi! I'm so glad you came here for information. The people here are not just moms in the early stages but we have a couple men here with wonderful nuke experience. You'll get it like it is. But I would recommend if you haven't already to find your son's boot camp group. You will want to have that information too.
It will be 5 yrs in May since I took my son to get sworn in. He is currently deployed on the USS Carl Vinson which is seeing duty in the Persian Gulf. My son-in-law is a former navy nuke who went on to school after the navy and is a nuclear engineer. It is a tough program but the thing is, the navy molds these young people into something very special. If your son was chosen, it was because they think he can do it. Don't think right now about the what ifs, what if he doesn't like it, what if he can't do it, what if, what if. Like N4M10756, one breath at a time.
I think the graduation rate is far above 30% and the ones who don't make it through, from what we see here anyway, get reassigned to something that seems to suit them better. Right now, just get through BC, and make plans to attend PIR if you can. It's so awesome you won't want to miss it if at all possible. We're here for you so don't hesitate to ask questions or share concerns.
Hi Marixi.....When my Sailor first started talking about the Nuke program we were a little nervous too but after he did his research and talked to other people that have been through the program he decided to go for it. The best word to describe the program is "intense". My Sailor is just now in his last month of A school and is working super hard but not struggling at all. I know there are allot of really fabulous, experienced Mom's on this site that can give you allot of really good information. I wouldn't worry too much. The nice thing is you can talk to him and communicate with him pretty much all through the schooling process. I talk to my Sailor almost every day via text or phone. Miss him like crazy but he is doing super good. You will be amazed at the growth of your son when he gets out of BC. They are like different people. More mature, strong and confident. Keep us updated on his progress. :-)
Hello all... I may be jumping ahead of myself here. My son in just starting his 2nd week of BC. He is set to go to Charleston for school afterward. I'm nervous about this. Someone told me that only about 30% of the students in Nuke school actually graduate. Also, some military guys told my husband horror stories about if people can't get through the school. Normally I'm the calm, rational parent.. the one who keeps her cool and analyzes things before freaking out. I never expected to feel like this when my son left for BC. Ugh.... He has never been much of an athletic kid. Tall and lean and very hairy... lol... sloppy to a fault... almost what you might call lazy, however school grades came so easy to him without even studying... yet, he chose this career. hahaha
And comments or advice is much appreciated.
Js/Ssmom...I haven't had a chance to read those books yet, but they sound GREAT!
A street band would be fun wouldn't it? I know he is close friends with one of the Sailors from his TG from BC and he plays the guitar. You never know!
William...ahhh...sunny beaches...who could ask for anything more?
I love the beach pictures. It better than all the snow we have here in NY. Enjoy your time in HI.
