HI.  My son got to GC last weekend. He hasn't started classes yet for MM (N).   I want to send him some gift cards for food.  What places are there to eat on base that he could go to (like at the NEX).  I couldn't find anyplace that lists food choices (when they are not eating at the Galley).

Happy Tuesday!

CoTwin - Yep, I'm kind of the runt of the family LOL.  Happy for you that one of your sailors will be home soon on leave.  It will be exciting for him to see the new homestead ;-)  And fingers crossed that grad stays on track for your nuke!

Otter1765 - wow, only 1 phone call - that's a tough one.  Good thing is you will be able to have more contact once he gets to GC. We've been lucky in that our son calls us once a week - he's done this for 2 years now.  It was every Sunday but when he got to prototype we had to be more flexible with his schedule.  He always managed to make it work though!  I'm anxious to see how things will be when he reports to his ship later this month....at least they are in dock so hopefully the calls will continue for a bit....We talk to our sailor more than we talk to our college son (who is only 30 minutes away!).

NCNarrator, my son is the same way.  He will be going to GC on Saturday after he graduates BC.  Other Moms have gotten calls (same Div) but I have not since the 1 minute 'I am here' call 9 weeks ago.

Yes we are visiting our son in Hawaii.

Comment by Dittersmom on February 3, 2015 at 1:28am

NCNarrator I think that you hit the nail on the head.  It is if they talk and not if they can.  I am one of the lucky ones and I talk and skype with my sailor often, but I hear of others moms living in the dark.

NukeMomReese -- Our son was able to stay with us right after PIR and didn't have to be back until 9:30pm Friday night.  We met him at the airport at 3am and stayed with him until he flew out the 3pm.  It was a long day for everyone, but worth it to us.  We met many of the young men that were flying out with him and we were able to shop and eat together before he left.  We gave him his laptop, phone, and some regular clothes.  We mailed the rest of his clothes, pillow, and some personal items to NNPTC.  Good luck to your sailor.

Comment by NCNarrator on February 3, 2015 at 12:47am

Oh, they CAN talk.  Whether or not they WILL talk depends on the sailor.  I have major jealousy of moms whose sailors actually communicate.  Mine doesn't think about it - so I get texts like, "Just landed in San Diego."  When I text back, "What are you doing in San Diego instead of South Carolina?"  He texts back, "Oh.  I'm going to visit my girlfriend in San Diego this weekend.  Sorry.  Thought I mentioned it."   LOL

Bustersmom, my son is in A school right now and I text or talk to him almost every day.  He doesn't have his phone until about 3:30 their time and then he goes to the gym and dinner then comes back and heads to study for 1 hour and back at his room about 8:00 or 9:00 pm his time, sometimes earlier.  This is my Sailor's schedule and we talk quite often.  It is so nice for them to have their phones and computers.  Way better then BC.  ;-)

B'snukemom...My son has that same T. LOL you are so tiny. cute little mom.

Texting with my sons. One is to come home for leave before deploying with USS Bainbridge for 8 months.

The nuke said expected to graduate end of March and will have that month leave/relocate time. He said most likely duty station will be SD, Bangor or Hawaii. I am happy about those spots.

Comment by Lilo54 on February 2, 2015 at 9:05pm

It depends on where he is going for A school.  If sailors are staying at GL, they have a more leave for the weekend but have to be back at the barracks each night and it ends on Sunday.  But since you are in this group, I assume he is a nuke.  Then he has liberty starting right after PIR on Friday until 7 or 8PM depending on his division.  My son left GL at 2AM for the airport and flew out to Charleston at 8AM in the morning on Saturday.  We only got to spend Friday with him.  It wasn't a lot but it was worth every hour!  Sometimes they have until Sunday to fly out but that is unusual!
