I am also looking for someplace to have Thanksgiving dinner. Any thoughts? Cracker Barrel is not an option.

Anyone with ideas on where to stay or where to visit in Charleston should list it on the Places to stay and villas in the discussions above. click view all and find it.

They do get I think 10 days off for Christmas if in A school or Power school. It is my understanding that Prototype will not come home :(
First Christmas without my nuke, the other IT twin has missed both thanksgiving and Christmas two years now, First year he was in Boot Camp and second year he was deployed to the deep blue sea, sea, sea....

AustinNavyMom - your son probably won't have even started class by Thanksgiving - he will probably still be in his indoc period (read about that above in "Your Sailors Schedule Upon Arrival to GC").  During that time they are standing watch & learning the ropes.  He should have liberty but again you won't know for sure his watch schedule until he is there!

peejinator - if I remember correctly I believe A school & Power school are off Thurs - Sun at Thanksgiving.  Your sailor might have to do some study hours though but they should be available Tues/Wed evening (but again it will depend on their study hours).

The Navy does not pay for their travel over the holidays.

Rhonda K - you & I should get together sometime since we are so close!  We could meet at a Starbucks in between Temecula & Riverside ;-)

Does the Navy pay for the Sailor's travel home during the holidays?

Comment by peejinator on October 9, 2014 at 11:26am

Mamma D - Ok...will the sailors have free time Tuesday or Wednesday before Thanksgiving?  If they don't have time during the day, will they have time at night?

Hi Momtom32,

I know we stayed at a really cute hotel that was kind of like a bed and breakfast and did allot of bike riding and visited a Plantation tour that was fabulous.  I went with a girlfriend that planned everything. I will look at our emails and will get back to you on where we went.  Stay tuned! ;-)  B'sNukeMom, Thank you for the info.  We have not booked flights yet but just the hotel as I feel like it would book fast during that time of year.  I won't book flights until we are positive of his schedule.  I would love to have him home for Christmas if at all possible.  You are soooo helpful and amazing.  Thank you again for all your valuable information as this is so new to all of us.  Appreciated more then you know.  ;-)

Good Morning - Happy Thursday!

Rhonda - yes your son should have time off over the holidays.  Nuke school goes on holiday stand down for 2 weeks.  He might not get both weeks off (they do need people to stand watch!) but he should get one week or the other.  Once it gets closer his SLPO (Section Leader Petty Officer) will fill him in on everything.  Try to hold off on making plans until you have more info - and if you make airline reservations Southwest is good to use in case you have to make changes!

TallyMom - Welcome!  I know I sound like a broken record, but make sure you look at the discussion forum above.  There is lots of good info there. Hit "View All" and you will see discussions on all sorts of topics.  If you can't find an answer to something there by all means ask away!  "Your Sailor's Schedule Upon  Arrival to GC" is a good one to read.

Co-Twin - boy 3 houses now - WOW!  Hopefully one of them will stand out as the one!  I hope you don't have to do too much work since you will be busy with culinary school!  Post pictures when you make a decision on which house ;-)

Our Marti Girl is feeling better every day.....she goes back to the vet on Sunday and they will remove some of her stitches.  The leg ones will have to wait longer....

Have a nice visit with your sailor sportykr - please share some pics of Charleston at Halloween.  I would love to see that!

Hope everyone has a great day!

Rhonda K., my son will graduate PS in Nov. and we plan to spend the weekend with him. We are thinking of going to Savannah to to get him away for a few days ( I have visited Charleston 2 with him), do you have any suggestions for a visit there?
