All those going to PIR on Friday .. there is a great photo op in the mini-museum that you walk thru to get to the hall ... be sure to take a pic of your sailor in front of the giant ship mural!! Also, tell everyone in your group to make a pit stop before you get seated ... you'll be waiting a longgggg time before the ceremony begins and if you've had coffee, 'nuff said!!

Sunnyb - is your son an MM, ET or EM?  if he is an MM the A school is 14 weeks long, so he will get leave after he graduates most likely, BUT you can't always count on that.  My son said the class that graduated the week before him got denied their leave right away.  If he is an EM or ET then his A school is 6 months long and he should get leave after graduation.

My son did say that they have a 4 day weekend over the 4th of July, so you might be able to go visit him then.

He should also have the first weekend, or maybe two, free when he first gets to Charleston, but seeing as he has PIR on the 18th, and depending what rate he is, he might have to wait two to three weeks to get school started, which could actually push him back to just after the 4th of July holiday weekend.  He won't know until he gets there when his A school actually starts, then he should also get a graduation date for A school.  I hope this helps a little.

Well Sunnyb, it depends how close you live to the base....... A school is 6 months long, and generally there is a leave after that. Since your son will be starting in June or July, it's possible that his first break might be at Christmas time when the schools close for the holiday.

In A school there are phases that they go through. See above discussions - there is one about what your sailor can expect upon arrival to Goose Creek that goes into detail on the phases. However, at some point, he will be able to travel 400 miles from the base on weekends and that might present an opportunity for a visit before Christmas time!

Hi Nuke moms! I just joined because I have a question. My son graduates boot camp 6/17 and will be heading down to Charlston SC for A school the 18th. Just wondering if you knew when their breaks are... mom is wondering when her son gets a break to come home. ~just wanna have it in my head so I'm not hoping for things that aren't coming too soon~

We skipped my son's PIR he wanted me to visit him during A school instead and deliver his car, which we did last weekend.  I am working on getting him set up with USAA auto insurance so he has his own policy, I talked to them and send him a Power Of Attorney form for him to sign.  I opened my own account which I can use for everything but buy my own car insurance at the discounted rates.  If he completes the POA and faxes it to them, then I can set it up for him by phone.

USAA does have am auto insurance plan where they will let the sailor have his own policy on a car that is owned by the parents and this is better for them in the long run to have continuous coverage under their own name.  It will be a lot cheaper too then I can remove him as a driver on my policy.

Oh the memories of PIR.  I tell you, I was great until they called LIBERTY and that is when the watery eyes started.  I could just almost feel and hear the sigh of relief that all of the recruites let out.  My son had a few challenges in bootcamp, which I mentioned before I think, sever shin splints and swollen calves, a black mass they found on his kidney, illness, wisdom teeth.  It was such a relief when we knew he was through and was o.k.

Now we are still battling the severe sprained ankle and wondering how that is all going to play out for his future.

we sat about 3 or 4 rows up...right in front of the sign that said DIV 152.   When the divisions came in, DIV 152 was on the OTHER SIDE of the "press box" where the VIPs sit, not where they had put the sign, or had us sit!  So, DIV 153 was right in front of us, not DIV 152.  We didn't see our son until after the ceremony when liberty was called.  Yes, we had binoculars, but it's harder to see things far away AND at an angle!  Oh, well.  Looking forward to A school graduation.  I'm guessing I'll have a better seat!

well he had all of his letters we sent and a few things that he wanted us to take from him so he didnt have to take them to GC with him...he said he didnt have room in his seabag for all that stuff and that was the best time for us to take it from him. the best thing i remember that day was in the car once we got off base and far enough away he let out a HUGE sigh of relief, like he had been holding in that breath for 8 weeks

Andi...my sailor was the same way, wanted to get off base ASAP! But he didn't need to grab anything so we just walked right out :)

we sat up in the top area, but were the first row. so it took us a little bit of time to get downstairs to him when liberty was called, but we had a pretty decent view thru the railings. when his division was marching in i have no idea how but his brother spotted him first...and there was a very short kid next to him and he is about 5'10" haha and he was a section leader so once they were finally lined up he was the first one in his row...and the short kid was now behind him. so in all the pictures i took of them lined up you can easily spot him!! i remember him looking forward the whole time but he claims he glanced up at us a few times during the ceremony. and we probably got there around 8 and his brother and i both had our ipods and were making jokes to pass the time before it started. he was just being his normal self. as soon as we found him though it was a SUPER short reunion..quick hugs, i got a quick kiss, then he was like "ill meet you at the nex i wanna go get my stuff so we can go" he didnt want to waste ANYMORE time on base than he had too
