For the privacy and safety of you and/or your sailor, NO LAST NAMES ARE ALLOWED, even if your last name differs from that of your sailor (please make sure your URL address does not include your last name either). Also, please do not include your email address in your user name. Go to "Settings" above to set your Username. While there, complete your Profile so you can post and share photos and videos of your Sailor and share stories with other moms!

Join groups! Browse for groups for your PIR date, your sailor's occupational specialty, "A" school, assigned ship, homeport city, your own city or state, and a myriad of other interests. Jump in and introduce yourself! Start making friends that can last a lifetime.

OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

What I meant about the nap was...they have to be back at either 8 or 9 pm (believe me...they will know and will make sure they aren't late!). They are bussed usually to the airport at around 2 a.m the next day....some maybe at 5 a.m. depending on their flights. So....you go back to your hotel room after dropping off your sailor, set your alarm, and get some shut eye if you plan to be at the airport to visit with your sailor starting around 3 a.m. or so. You can leave the hotel at the same time that your sailor is leaving on the bus (some families like to be at the airport when the sailors arrive) or you can leave a little later and meet up with them at the USO. But remember, if Midway, it is better to be there when they arrive so you can meet them before security to get your gate pass (they need to be with you)....the reason being that the Midway USO is past security so you can't meet your sailor there without the pass.

When I talked with my Sailor he said he thought it was Chicago Ohare but, I didn't realize that some might be leaving from Midway. Also I was a little confused about when you said take a nap after dropping him off at RTC on PIR day! So Thursday is PIR, they will have to be back in by 9:30pm then at 2am they go to the airport. Is that the time that we should leave to go to the airport as well?

Comment by J&R's Mom on May 23, 2011 at 4:10pm: Hi! When I spoke to my SR yesterday he told me he gets to visit with us after PIR for about 30 min? (I think, we had him on speaker, was so jazzed to hear from him!) then he has to go move his things cause he is staying in Great Lakes, then to a 3 hr briefing, then he would meet up with us at the hotel. My daughter was thrilled cause we will all be exhausted, we are not getting in until 12:30 am Thurs, so we shall nap. I am not sure if I will sleep tonight either -- GO 181/182 !!!

Comment by diannep on May 23, 2011 at 4:04pm: ria: If they are leaving from Ohare in Chicago, you need to meet them at the USO center. If they are leaving from Midway, you need to pre-arrange to meet your sailor in front of security since the USO is past security. In each case, your sailor will go with you to his/her airlines counter and with proper ID, you will be able to get a gate pass to go through security and to wait with your sailor at his/her gate until the flight leaves.

You may want to take a nap after dropping your sailor off at RTC on PIR Day so you have a few hours of sleep before heading to the airport. They are bussed there in the wee hours of the morning to wait for their flights.

Julie: If you are meeting your sailor at the airport, you can bring a black backpack with personal items in it (beware of airlines carryon rules which apply to this). Cell, laptop, a few civilian clothes that they can wear when they phase up, some food items if you like....this is purely voluntary. Some wait and mail their sailors these things once they arrive at A School.
