You're so very welcome!  Love your detailed feedback of your time with your new Sailor too.  Oh, how cool that waitress was to give your son that awesome recognition!  How was the food at The Shanty, by the way??

Before we all head our separate ways to join groups for our new sailor's A schools, I want to say thank you to everyone for the great questions, super answers from the leader moms and support from everyone this past 8+ weeks.

PIR was everything I had hoped for and more. We just happened to sit by three other families from Colorado. Who knew! Our sailors even knew each other. :)

We stayed at Navy Lodge and it was great. We had a room with three beds and a separate living room and kitchen, stocked with fridge, dishes and pots and pans. We brought our sailor back with us after PIR and we made lunch and listened to his stories. He was glad to have a nice meal with us. I loved having the kitchen to cook for him, but he wanted to try a steak house he heard about (called The Shanty) for dinner so we headed that way and he told more stories. I couldn't get enough!

The community around the base was also wonderful. A waitress at the restaurant stopped to talk with our sailor and congratulate him and after our meal, she brought him a dessert (his favorite-chocolate lava cake) and announced to the entire restaurant that we had a new sailor with us. Everyone applauded (I cried).

The next day, we went to the airport and waited with him for his early flight, savoring every moment we could get. I was so very glad to know about what to do and what to expect because of the guidance here! Thank you!

The time went so fast. I am jealous of those who had extended time over the weekend because their sailor was staying at Great Lakes. My son did call again today because it is a holiday, so he had the day off. He was thankful to have the extra day to get his things in order and he's ready for school tomorrow!

The words thank you just don't seem sufficient to express my gratitude for those here. You helped make our time in Great Lakes so much more than I ever could have hoped for!!!

Mitch's_mom:  Thanks so much for the info on Navy Lodge.  We are advising future PIR groups not to stay there if their sailors are staying in GL for A School.   Sad that it is happening since Navy Lodge is a great place to stay, but better to be safe than sorry! 

So glad you had so much fun with your new sailor!  Thanks for all of the info here.  By the way, we stayed at Residence also back in 2010 and liked it as well.  We flew so couldn't bring our dogs, but someone had a beautiful Golden Retriever there....sigh....made me miss my dogs!

It was everything I thought it would be. PIR was fantastic, although rather warm. I had a heavy sweater on, and was melting. They definitely had the heat turned up. My son is staying in GL for A school. He was relieved I didn't book a room at the Navy Lodge, as he was told ge wouldn't be able to go there, and they no longer give out chits (special permission) to go there. So, for future Sailors staying in GL for A school, the Navy Lodge is off limits. However, Sailors who are flying out can can go there, and I've heard all good things about it. We stayed at the Residence Inn, it was awesome. They were very nice. They hung a banner on our door, they gave a great free breakfast. We were allowed to bring our dog, (we drove here.) It was plenty big enough for my Sailor to relax. We got a 2 bedroom, as his girlfriend came with us too. I cooked him 2 meals right in the room. He really just wanted to chill out at the hotel. On Friday we picked him back up at about 3:30, then we went back to the room. I cooked him dinner. Saturday, we went to see a movie and out to dinner. Sunday he just wanted to stay at the hotel and relax. Since today is a Holiday, he has liberty again, but needs to get some stuff done before tomorrow. We are planning on going by the base to give him one last hug, and then we'll be in our way. We were planning on spending a half day with him today, but he called late last night and and said he has to get caught up and get stuff done. He doesn't want to be behind. Love him! :-) We had a wonderful relaxing time!

How was it ladies??  Also want to follow up on the Navy Lodge situation.  Were Sailors in Great Lakes A school allowed to visit you there?  Thanks for any feedback you can provide!
