The Meet and Greet is a fun event for Sailors loved ones to meet face to face. That's all it was in the beginning. Sarge started his own a few years ago and provides information about PIR in his. Almost all of it can be found here,  on RTC FB, or RTC's website. I would say that the extra he provides would be on transportation, getting around and it is more entertaining, a nice fun time.

Don't worry about missing it. It runs from 4:45-9:30 just in case you think you might make some of it.

The link I gave you (2nd one) by CatMom has a lot of very good tips though for PIR.

Sneakers are fine and so are jeans. You will see many forms of attire. From casual to business casual to very dressy. Your Sailor will be in their dress Blue uniform (Cracker Jacks).

The Sailors turn in another Access List to security for PIR about 7-10 days before PIR with the correct names on them. So if your Form Letter had mom, dad, sis etc. then they do fix that.

The Sailors are bussed to their Airports in large groups in the wee hours of the morning. They will have different departures but they still send them all at the same time. Saturday usually. Occassionally, they could leave a day later , due to flight availability or some other delay, but the Navy does their best to get them out by Saturday. They find out their itinerary just before or day of PIR. Have your Sailor write this down for you. You may meet them when they arrive at the AP or later if your Sailor has a later flight.

Make sure he/she has a working phone card as you will not be able to give them their cell phone until you see them at the AP. ( New Sailors may not bring anything back to RTC after liberty.) This way if you don't meet them when they arrive they can call you to meet up. They usually go to the USO after they get checked in.

To get a Gate Pass to go through security and be with your Sailor until they leave make sure everyone has ID. Your Sailor must be with you and you go to the ticket counter to get them. The airlines are good about this.

Please see this post . It is also located up above in the Discussion Forum:

And this one:

Those are direct links just click on them.

Do you have your Vehicle Gate Pass? You will need this to be able to drive your vehicle onto RTC.

Please ask anything that pops into your head. Nothing is neurotic or dumb, k? We're here to help.

Hello, I just joined this site less than a week ago. I have read through all the tips. I must admit I am still feeling overwhelmed and unprepared. I learned a lot of stuff I should have known many weeks ago. I have our flight, hotel and car rental booked. Coming from FL worried about our winter gear. Is it acceptable to wear sneakers to PIR? My father was planning on wearing jeans, Is this allowed? I do not think we will make it to the meet and greet due to our flight arrival time. Is it bad if we miss this? Paranoid my recruit will not have our names correct and we will miss PIR. Confused on how to get to spend time with him at the airport before he leaves for A school. I sound neurotic. I appreciate any correspondence.

Good Morning!

royalbrit & robin918,

If you are both coming in about the same time to O'Hare, you can share the cost of Sarge's shuttle to your hotels and save money~~  That is, if neither of you plan on renting your own car...

You can friend each other and private message each other to see if the specifics of your travel will work out...

Everyone,

If you haven't had a chance to check out my "PERTINENT PIR TIPS" yet, now would be a good time to do so~~
