Alicia,

I chose to meet my Sailor daughter at Midway airport at 2:00 am.  She had left RTC on the bus about 12:30 am (zero dark thirty) and arrive there about 1:30 am. I parked at an offsite lot because it was only $14.00 flat day rate.  The lot attached to the terminal charges $5.00 per hour.  A shuttle came to pick us up in the heated waiting area.  I tipped the driver when he dropped us off.  He was nice and very knowledgeable and dropped us off at the terminal telling us which door to enter.  The Sailor were all on the second level of the terminal with all their bags on the floor listening to the USO volunteer give instructions.  Then group by group, according to the flights leaving, he led them and their family members to the ticket counter to get their boarding passes.  My Sailor got her boarding pass, then came to us and stood with us.  We each showed our ids and they printed out gate passes.  Then we went to the security checkpoint where we had to take our shoes off and get scanned.  Then it was off to the USO for my daughter to drop off her backpack for safekeeping.  We visited places to eat and the giftshops until she had to be at her boarding gate and hour before boarding.  Don't forget to take pictures of your Sailor with any other Sailors he/she is friendly with too.  I got to be at the airport with her from 2:00 am - 10:30 am when she actually boarded the plan~~  Precious, precious time!!

Anyone on here with a future sailor planning to attend A School in GL and you are planning to stay at Navy Lodge for PIR?  If so, please friend request/private message me for some info.  Thanks!

Alicia:  If OHare, the USO is before security---so you could find your sailor.  Midway, it is past security....but it works out for them to get there with you to get the passes.  Many try to arrive at the airports when their sailors are getting ready to check in (which is around 4 a.m.) and get the gate passes after that.  We have never heard of a family member not getting the airlines gate pass because their sailor couldn't find them, so I know it will work out.  Someone else had posted once that if you give the airlines your sailor's name, and it is on their list, they can give you a pass, but not positive that is true.  But I know it works out. Sarge may have more info on this.

Dianne, you mentioned that our sailors will be with us to obtain the gate pass at the airlines counter. How does this work? How do we find our sailors before they go through security?

Very normal for Bootcamp, Victoria.  Lots to learn!  Take it one step at a time!
