CatMom:  I heard this morning that the injured sailor had a leg artery hit by one of the bullets.  I sure hope that it won't cost him his leg, as it did my friend's sailor son.  So horrible to have happen, especially in front of his young girls.  I believe he is only 29 yrs old?

Alicia:  Yes, they can purchase the phone cards at the NEX with their Recruit Supply Card and if they haven't yet, other SRs who have them are very good about lending them to their shipmates.  Glad you mailed one....remember the mail is held for about 2 weeks from them so not sure when their first mail distribution will be....possibly Sunday?  If not, should be next week.  They must train the Recruit Mail Petty Officer for each division first.   They can then mail out every Monday but receive mail M-F.

Hoping that some receive calls today!

Trecia:  I agree TOTALLY with what CatMom said below.  Last name exposure on FB is very hard for the military....and OPSEC.  Private groups or not, there are ways to get into them, no matter how hard the administrators try to filter.  They are just people like us and are not privy to lists of the SRs in Bootcamp.  I too prefer this site.  I am on FB privately but do not access the Navy groups there.

Good Morning All !

Creolegoddess, prayers for you and your son. I can imagine it will be very stressful for both of you as you said for the final outcome.

Diannep, thank you for the info. I guess I had assumed all was well once the recruits make it through P-days (unless something new develops). And, prayers for the sailor injured breaking up the fight at the family gathering--it breaks my heart.

I have a question that I'm going someone can answer. I didn't think to send a phone card along with my son. I didn't receive his form letter with his address until Tuesday & promptly mailed a phone card, BUT if they're by chance allowed calls home today, what happens if he doesn't have the card yet? Have they been instructed to purchase one at NEX?

Trecia,

The Facebook group is much more public and the admins there give good guidance and try to keep tabs on the members observing OPSEC and not revealing too much about their lives and their SRs.

Personally, I prefer that this site is much more private.  We are trying to teach you that as you go down the Navy journey with your SR/Sailor, that his/her/the Navy's safety is in your hands as the families also.

Stay on here as well.  We want all of you to be the best prepared for PIR as possible!!  We want to avoid unexpected scenarios as much as possible~~  :)

creolegoddess,

Praying for the best outcome for your boyfriend as his waiver request is processed.  Please have peace in whatever the future holds~~

diannep,

Prayers for that Sailor who was injured breaking up that fight at his family's gathering.  May our God protect his life and for a full recovery for him!!  My heart hurts for his wife, children, and the rest of his family~~

creolegoddess:  Yes, it can take a good while to investigate it all and the SRs are there for a long time in some cases.  Prayers for your SR as he tries to stay and become a sailor!

Alicia:   There have been many different reasons for the discharge of these SRs/sailors.  Some had pre-existing conditions that were disclosed to recruiters, but they were told it didn't matter, don't say anything.  :-(  When in Bootcamp and the conditions discovered, they were discharged.  Others have been diagnosed at Bootcamp with dischargeable conditions....asthma, panic attacks, anxiety....many times, families post that their SRs had no history of these, but sometimes the pressure of Bootcamp can bring out anxiety/panic attacks.  I don't really understand about the asthma diagnosis though....they do a "test" on the SRs if it is suspected, but I really don't see how a family could not have known their SR had asthma?

If a SR had a pre existing condition, they really are supposed to get a waiver before Bootcamp in order to get in.  But many times, that is not done---and a recruiter will say it is not necessary.

I don't want anyone to worry about this like it happens alot, because hopefully, it doesn't.  But occasionally it does happen.

And, yes, Alicia, there have been some cases where they were still investigating as the SR completed Bootcamp and they were held medically after graduation to complete the investigation, and sometimes discharged after that before leaving for A School.  As far as discharge during A School, not sure about that, but actually a sailor can be discharged at any point if there is a medical reason discovered that deems them unfit to serve.

Trecia:  There is usually a FB group started for each PIR group.  Please be sure to stay on this one too!  Sometimes we "lose" people to FB....they forget about us....so please stay on here too so you get the benefit of great info from both sites!

Our news down here in S FL just reported a sailor shot down here in front of his 2 children.  Very sad....he is still alive, but critical.  He had just returned from deployment (based in GA) and was visiting his mom/family for the holiday.  He was trying to break up a fight, the innocent victim, and was shot.  Please say a prayer for this sailor.  His mom said he is beloved by all and wouldn't hurt anyone.  Sailors are ALWAYS on duty, and he was doing the right thing.  Reminds me of my good friend's sailor son who was trying to stop a robber who had just robbed a man, and he was shot 2 yrs ago...should have died...several times.  As it was, he lost a kidney, most of his colon, and his lower right leg.  He was deemed a hero, received a full medical discharge (which means benefits for life for him/family), and he now has a ministry and speaks around the country of his faith.  He also has competed in the Wounded Warriors "Olympic" competitions!

God Bless all of our sailors!
