Hi!  I just survived PIR February 2/10/2012 and I thought I would pass on some words of advice.  This advice was given to me and I thought I would share it with you all (so I hope you don't mind).

First of all - ENJOY and bring plenty of kleenex!!

My husband thought I was totally nuts, but I woke him up at 4:30 a.m. and we got to the gate at 5:35 a.m.  We were the second car in line.  Within a minute the line of cars was around the block.

We arrived Thursday afternoon.  So we drove by the base so we knew where we were going - that really helped.  The base entrance that you will be going into is on Ohio Street.  Also have your Gate Pass on your dashboard.  In the letter you got from your Recruit it says something about having your car registration, driver's license and insurance card - they told us they didn't want to see the insurance card.  But have that handy just in case.

Several of the hotels mention they have a Shuttle.  The Shuttle is a Van which lets people off at the Front Gate on Ohio Street and they have to walk to the Hall.  If it is cold or snowy, that can be a long walk, BUT you will miss that long, long line of traffic.

The Hall does offer refreshments - coffee, soft drinks and pop corn.  We didn't buy any so I can't say what the prices were like.

Word of warning - everyone goes to the NEX after the Graduation Ceremony and it is a mad house!!  Avoid at all costs.  When you drop off your new Sailor that night you can come into the Base as far as the Chapel and you can shop at the NEX that night - no one is there!!

If you want to do some shopping there is Gurnee Mills Mall on 132 - fantastic outlet mall - highly recommend!

If anyone has any questions, feel free to drop me a line.  Hope you all enjoy the Graduation!!!!  My son is now down in Pensacola, FL!

Got a call today.  He's been SIQ with pneumonia but says he is going back to regular duty tomorrow.  Can't wait to see him.  I'm getting packed too.  WooHoo.  We are almost there.

Haha, MamaBear..I am almost packed, have my green scarf, still trying to figure out who our 15 year old is staying with (or who is staying here with our 15 year old) and catching that plane on Thursday morning...

I am ignoring weather.com and all that talk of snow....

COUNTDOWN says 4 days!  What happened to the time!  I have gone AWAL just a little bit, and will be working all the way up to Wednesday so now I don't have "Enough" time!  Now that's a problem I can deal with! To Do list:   Dog sitter, 15 year old kid sitter, bills to pay, LAUNDRY, GREEN fleece to buy and cut, Teddy Bear to convert into a sailor, pack pack pack, catch an air plane!

Yeah, sometimes there is more than one 900 division but it is my understanding that all 900's are performing divisions, just may be performing different things. Not everyone in each of the 900's are performer's though. They also have a lot of non-performers who work behind the scenes. They do everything from being greeters to taking care of VIP's and some are even body snatchers although they can be from any division. Body snatchers are the ones who walk between the isles during PIR and watch for anyone who looks like they may pass out. The Sailor have to stand for a long time and if they lock their knees they can loose blood flow which can cause them to pass out. It is kind of scary when you see one go down but they try to catch them and they will drag them to a room in back for them to recover. Many in the performing division have band, choir, flag, drill or more importantly marching experience. Marching is not an easy thing to learn for some. They also get placed in this division when they have high asvab scores because they won't need to study as much so the added practice times are not as difficult to fit into their schedule. Even though other 900 divisions have occasionally won at captains cup like the 913 for this group and the 910 for PIR 1-27 it is still a rare thing and very exciting when they do win. I am very proud of them :-)
