~OPSEC OPerational SECurity, is always of the utmost importance.

~N4M’s also has Community Guidelines just like any other social media.

~Please take the time to read the OPSEC and N4M’s Community Guidelines.

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:

• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.

Some Suggestions:

~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.

~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option

~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends".

Teachjc,

If you can check out my "Pertinent PIR Tips" up in the Discussion Forum, I have a code there for Enterprise Rent-a-Car for a free upgrade   You probably have to call their 800 number to book as for some reason, the website said the code was expired (but its not).  It is a code from Allstate Motor Club.

I also have info on meeting your soon-to-be-sailor at the airport. My sailor daughter flew out of Midway, but the info pretty much applies for Chicago O'Hare too (except traveling there will take about 40 mins.).  You might be able to find out where their offsite parking are and prices if you look online or call the airport.  Your SR won't be able to tell you his flight plan location and times until the "I'm a Sailor" call after he passes Battlestations.

Mail this on an index card to your recruit if they are flying out to another base on PIR weekend. Once they get their itinerary they should fill it out and then give it to you at PIR. They won't have this info in time to mail it. They go back to their ship and rack to check out and that is when they should grab it so remind them. This will keep you from ending up at the wrong airport. :)

Please fill this out when you get your final orders and then give it to us at PIR. Do not mail it.

For those of you looking for a special gift for your SR-soon-to-be-Sailor, please check out www.pirgifts.com .  They have Challenge Coins, which are a military tradition.  Craig, who is one of thei administrators on Navy for Moms, designed the ones that are connected to the ships at RTC.  The name of your SR's ship is right next to the ship number in the Discussion section.  When you click on one of the coins, you will be taken to a page where there is a video about Challenge Coins.  This would be a special gift especially connected to their Boot Camp days!  Another really sharp coin is the Core Values one in the section where 70 other coins are available--it has cut outs and a diamond cut beveled edge.  These coins are no longer given out by the Navy to the Sailors, so it is up to friends and family.

Like diannep said some Sailors flying out may leave on Sunday not Saturday. It MAY be possible to find this our before you go to PIR, but not always.

My son had PIR on Memorial Day weekend. He was a fly out. So, I based my plans that he would leave the day after PIR. That's what he new still when he called after BST-21. (We also had a Thursday PIR, so "day after" was Friday.) BUT based on what my veteran PIR mommas told us I also planned for staying until Sunday ...just in case. It paid off as he called Tuesday before PIR to let me know that plans had changed and he was not leaving until Sunday morning! I was flying over at the time and did not get the message until I was at the Hotel that Tuesday night.

So, things can stay the same OR anything can and may happen! Ours was a Holiday weekend so we were very hopeful for it...but we have seen it happen on regular PIR's as well. Since they are flying commercial flight availability is a possible reason for this and I am sure there are other reasons.

You had better believe I posted that on here that night! LOL

Jesssea:  They get to finalize their lists a week or so before PIR....so hoping you get a call this weekend so you can tell your SR.  A letter may not arrive before the update for this PIR group, but you can try.

teach jc - You can meet your Sailor at the Airport and stay with him (time permitting) until he flies out.

The Sailors that fly out to their A schools (meaning anywhere other than GL) are bussed to their AP's in the "wee sma's" of  Saturday morning (usually anywhere from 1-3 AM...but it varies). They all go at once know matter what time their flight is (as a general rule). You can meet them at that time OR if you go later then arrange to meet them.

Make sure that they still have a working phone card so that they can contact you.

Sailors don't usually get their itinerary until a couple days (day, day of) before PIR. So you won't be able to get which AP and flight times until you see them. Have them write it down when you see them on PIR day.  Usually after they check in and get all settled they go to the USO's. I'll add a  PAGE (clickable link)with info about the USO's for reference. Midways is located past security and O'Hare's is before security. So you can get to them at Midway but will need to arrange or have them call you from O'Hare. (Milwaukee now has a USO, we just don't see it used much for the departing Sailors)

Make sure you have Government issued ID (Drivers License etc) for everyone wishing to go through security to the terminal gate. This is strictly enforced. Your Sailor has to be with you in order to verify that you are a military family so you can get the Gate Pass.

My Sailor arrived at Midway at 1 AM and we met him there then. Unfortunately, his flight left at 5:45 AM and by the time they got finished checking him in we could not get passes to go through to wait with him. No time. (There had been a change of plans with his group and some did not have boarding passes and that's why it took longer). We did visit right there though :-).

Yay!  I tee totally got a letter from my son!  He is doing great and passing things left and right.  We are so stoked to go to PIR!  He feels very confident about his progress and his ability to graduate.  I give God the glory.  So, my friends.  If God is willing, I will see some of you all there.  Don't even know how to dress!  He said the weather is really nice.
