navywife2012 - I'm not a Navy wife...Navy mom...but have been an AF Reserve/Law Enforcement (hubby's real job LOL) for 29 years. Hubby was deployed alst year from Jan-July. Son enlisted last March. On the bed thing...yeah...when I read your post I suddenly had a flash back of that time...slowly over time I remember hubby's side of the bed being "filled up" with books, magazines, tissues, etc! That is... when I didn't wake up with my dog laying there with his head on the pillow! (sigh)...I know. Guess I was trying not to make it look so vacant!
And yes...you'll get very different letters...your his sounding board...no one else will do! He definitely will feel so much better once he gets the next letters from you! I just added up how much I spent on just postage to mail boxes to hubby while in Iraq last year. Over $200.00! ...ansd I think I missed one somewhere as I could not find any for June and I know I sent one! So that's not counting the contents and then regular postage for cards and letters! LOL
As far as the Navy "owning" him...well, yes...I have felt that way... he has made a commitment...and while we sometimes don't "ask" for these things...we love our men and have made a commitment to them. One thing I read in a deployment book was a husband asking his wife "to join him in his endeavor"...what a nice way to put it!
I spent a lot of years fighting "it". How could I compete with the "glamour", excitement, thrill, chance to travel, that the military and law enforement could provide? It's was so easy to forget about the sacrifice, danger, having to do things because that's the way it is (whether you want to or not), the separation from me and his children...all those things that he has had to bear...for us. For me. It never was a competition in his mind. I just didn't understand how men think, how they are wired...and since I did not, I chose to take it personally. Yes...there does have to be a balance...but the scales always tip unevenly sometimes. We just have to be there for each other when they do. Know each other and talk with each other.
I'm still learning...but with a MUCH better attitude!
P.S. These are just my thoughts...not saying you did anything wrong or such...just baring the old soul, k? ;-)
flgirltwo - I know this was a while back...but You mentioned finding a post card from 1941? Your Dad I believe? Too funny...especially since what they write home hasn't changed much!
Here is a LIFE magazine shoot from 1940...courtesy of Craig. Uhh...I know the recruits now think their racks aren't always so great...but if they saw this...I think they'd be a little bit happy!
...and I sincerely hope they don't have to do this anymore...phooey...this time I can't blame Craig for being naughty as LIFE put it out!
