navywife:  Hilton Gardens are nice hotels.  If you plan to take a PIR shuttle, you need to ask them if they use this service. They are taxis that operate as shuttles for PIR ($3/pp each way, sailor returns with you for free usually).

Funny reading about all seeing their SRs in the pics.  When my son was at bootcamp, I swore that I saw a pik of him.  Printed it out, showed all of the family...I was so sure!  Well, it wasn't him...he wasn't even THERE when that particular shot was taken (candid shot).  Oh well....did my heart good to think it was him while he was in bootcamp.  Sure hope that you all are correct and it is of yours SRs because that is very cool!

Today is an awesome day! Went to mail todays letter out to Brianna, and picked up todays mail and what is there on top? Our first letter from Brianna! I cried when I read it, but I sure feel so much better when in the letter she told me yes its hard and yes there is a lot of yelling, but she said "I love it here" "I am having so much fun and have met so many new life long friends" This absolutely made my day! Hope everyone else gets their letters this week! Have a great night!

Hey guys which picture are you all talking about, the first in the running shots? If so I even think I see my recruit. It would be so exciting if so :)

Comment by flgirltwo on April 4, 2012 at 4:10pm

Saw the pictures on the Facebook page for Recruit Training Command.  I'm almost positive that I saw my son in the one picture where he's running!  If it's not him, he must have a twin!  Either way it made my day!  I will believe it is him and that he looks like he's doing great!  Excited!

Welcome to the new members!

Great story, flgirltwo!  What a treasure to find that postcard!  Yes, I have seen piks of what they used to sleep in and they were like hammocks.  YUCK!  So none of these SRs should complain, right?  At least they have RACKS!

Ariel:  Be sure to check out Southwest's flights into Milwaukee or Chicago-Midway.  There is no change fee, 2 bags checked free.  Milwaukee is 45 minutes straight drive to GL...no traffic....Chicago Ohare about 35-40 minutes when no traffic, which is almost NEVER!  Midway is the furthest away.   We had to change our flights when we went up there (son PIRed in 2010) and had to pay a change fee because not on SW.

If your SR will be flying out to A School, just remember that they fly out of Chicago...either airport.  Usually the day after PIR.  So if you do the "Milwaukee thing" with your flights, don't book back out until at least Sat. night or Sunday so you can spend "airport time" with your sailor on Sat...waiting for the flights.

If your SR will stay in GL for A School, you will have daytime liberty Sat and Sun, so we always say best to book back on Sunday night or Monday if possible.

There is a Meet and Greet link towards the top of the page.  Info on there about the different MeetNGreets.  Sarge's MeetNGreet is popular.  Hotels near his are Residence Inn Waukegan (studios and 2 bdrm 2 bth suites, full kitchen), Springhill Suites, Courtyard, Candlewood (suites).  Nice area...about 4 miles from base.  Most of these hotels have PIR shuttle ($3/pp each way).

There are also MeetNGreets at the Ramada and Flanigans.

Hey guys, just now finding you and so extremely excited about joining and already grateful for all that I've already read and learned so far. I also found this link to be very helpful to have some common knowledge as far as their day to life and hope this helps all of you who have not received a letter yet!

I look forward to the coming weeks to be able to count down and bounce stories and info to and from with all of you.

Was going through the china cabinet and found a postcard my dad had sent to his dad when he was at navy bootcamp at Great Lakes in 1941!  Hard to read - but did figure that they slept in hammocks (and 1 guy fell out and cracked his skull - yikes) and that my dad had not fell out ... yet!  He said the "chow" was good, but some fellows thought boot camp was worse than being in jail!  My dad was not impressed by all the shots he had had.  lol!  But all in all he said it was tough, but was enjoying it!  He must have because he stayed in 28 years before retiring!  Thought you moms might get a kick out of this!  Have a great day!

navywife2012 - Been writing basically the same thing...keeping him updated on his favorite sports teams, letting him know what his dog has been doing, cousins, grandparents, the little things we've been doing around the house.  Letting him know how great this group is and how supportive you all are of him as well.  The things I've been learning on this sight....whew, you'd think I'd run out of topics.....

Comment by diannep on April 4, 2012 at 8:05am

Bumped that discussion to the top of the list, VAMom.

Comment by diannep on April 4, 2012 at 8:04am

Momship!  Absolutely!  The MeetNGreets are very "family/friend friendly" and are open to all who have a sailor PIRing the next day. Children included!

Yes, VAMom, I think you are referring to the questionnaires that are fun to send to the SRs...and save them time!  Usually there are some samples posted above in the discussion groups.  Scroll through those and see if there are some there.  I will too and I will "bump up" any that I find.

Have a good day, everyone!
