N4M's Community Guidelines and OPSEC.

~OPSEC OPerational SECurity, is always of the utmost importance.

~N4M’s also has Community Guidelines just like any other social media.

~Please take the time to read the OPSEC and N4M’s Community Guidelines.

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:

• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.

Some Suggestions:

~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.

~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option

~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends".

Just be careful when you book through the discount travel sites.  Because....there is always a possibility that your SR could be delayed in training.  Sometimes with changes, these sites charge fees.  So be sure you know that up front.

I would suggest that all check out Southwest Airlines into either Milwaukee (45 min into GL) or Chicago-Midway (hour+ to GL).  They charge no change fee and 2 bags check for free.  There are pros and cons to both of these destinations:

Milwaukee:  PROS: No traffic, cheaper car rental, sometimes flights cheaper too

CONS:  Sailors don't fly out from this airport, in case you plan an airport visit with your departing sailor.  If your own return plans aren't until later in the day or the next day, that may not be a problem.

Chicago:      PROS:  One of the Chicago airports that departing sailors will fly from so you possibly will be at the same airport for your departing flights

CONS:  Traffic can be bad, making time to get to GL longer, flights+car rental may be more expensive

On hotel reservations, be sure to call the hotel directly and ask for the Navy Grad rate.  Compare this to any other discount rate you are entitled to, such as AAA, etc.  Springhill Suites, Courtyard Inn, Residence Inn (all close together and near Sarge's MeetandGreet held the night before PIR), and Navy Lodge (closest hotel to base) are hotels that we have received good reports on from ladies in previous PIR groups.  We stayed at Residence and liked it very much.

Good Morning !

Anyone with a loved one in Ship14 Div 242?

Crom:  Probably a good idea. Just remember....you will have well-meaning friends who want to identify with you and may say they know what you feel like missing your SR...because their child went off to college.  Well, it is not the same thing, as many moms who have had both will tell you!  There is still contact with the college students, visits, etc.....but know you are "among friends" here, all who understand any feelings you may come to have during the course of bootcamp!  Just don't get mad at your friends who may say the wrong thing....because they are really trying to understand!  :-)

thanks all for your replies, this is a lot to navigate as a newbie, but being that I am so private by nature, I don't think it will be much of an adjustment.  I kninda don't want just anyone to know anyhow.  I don't want to hear their .02 cents which they are often so eager to share.

By the way, what bonitacruz posted below is absolutely the way to do it!  No names, just initials.  We would love for you all to connect with other ladies on here who have SRs training with yours!

Crom:  ellen said it beautifully.  Remember, these SRs are in a very emotionally, mentally, and physically challenging state when in bootcamp.  When they write/call you, they usually want to share lots,  You are their "safe haven."  In the past, I have been so upset with ladies on here who have shared entire letters, some even typing them verbatim!  Really?  Does your SR really want you to do that?  Another time, one of the ladies said that she talked to her SR hubby and he said that he hated RDC (name).....and then he proceeded to name call this guy.....another lady on the site chimed in and posted:  When you see RDC _____ at PIR, you need to kick him in the ______!   WHAT????  Really?  I was stunned!  Thank the Lord the group creator was able to get those posts off pronto....there would have been "hell to pay" for those SRs and maybe the division.  But the question is:  No matter what her hubby said about his RDC, did he REALLY want his wife to post that on here?   Again, she was his "safe haven" and she betrayed that by doing what she did.  the group creator private messaged her gently to tell her why the post was deleted, and the lady would never respond.  Sigh...little does she realize how close came to getting her SR in trouble big time.

So, ellen's rule of thumb is a great one.  All should always ask that question before posting.  When in doubt, don't post it.

Having said that, most of the time, ladies are really good about keeping the info fine on this site.  Very rarely do we have to caution someone to be careful, so I would say that all are learning well.  Posting what the SRs have just completed activity-wise is fine, how they may be looking forward to chow or BattleStations, etc....all fine....even posting positive feelings about their shipmates and RDCs is fine!  But please don't post any negative said.  I don't believe the SRs would want that anyway.

By the way, for those on any FB division groups, please do not feel you don't have to follow these same rules there.   Because you do!  Remember, because last names are exposed on FB,you have to be extra careful.  I have had some ladies tell me it is safe because it is a "closed group."  Really?  Do we all really know each other here, ladies?  How can we be totally sure that everyone really has a SR at bootcamp?  See what I mean?  Gaining entry to a "closed group" on FB wouldn't be difficult for most anyone.  A friend of an RDC/family member, a person who works at RTC, etc.  Someone that you would not want reading negative comments that your SR made in private to you.

So, just keep comments on the up and up and there will never be a problem on any group!

Personally, I have been working on this site now for over 3 yrs and have found the ladies delightful and very respectable in most cases!  So we won't let a few "bad decisions"  mar that.
