Hi Laura! Div 936 here too :) Wendy, got box today - was a mess - still smelled like him. No letter yet here either. The post man thinks I'm a stalker. :)
Hi there~~
"For everything that was written in the past
was written to teach us, so that through endurance
and encouragement of the scriptures we might
have hope."
Romans 15:4
And, yes, all members of the sailor's group there for PIR are welcome at the MeetandGreet, children included! This is for families of all graduating on 7/18!
tsm: Sarge's MeetandGreet is from 5 - 9 pm.
Diannep, thank you for that great info! I didn't know about the no change fee for Southwest, I was worried about booking flights and then my son's graduation getting pushed back. Do you know approx what time the meet and greet is the night before? Would like to arrive in time for that. Can all families attend this?
Amen to what your husband said, elizabeth! And, as far as how you raised him as a single parent, kudos to you! I lost my husband when my sons were 15 and 17, so had him for most of their growing up years. But I had a new respect for single parents after that....especially during the teenage years! UGH! :-) And, yes, they are safe there! I had a nice sense of comfort when my son was there.
Emil: Check out flights on Southwest Airlines....no change fee, 2 bags check for free. They fly into Milwaukee (45 min to GL) or Chicago Midway (hour+ to GL depending on traffic). If your SR is setback for any reason, you can change flights with just paying difference in cost of new flights...which could even be cheaper at the later date! You never know!
Recommended hotels on here from other families are:
Navy Lodge (only a mile or so from RTC, good rates, book in your SR's name if you do not have military ID yourself).
Springhill Suites, Residence Inn (we liked that), Holiday Inn Express (CatMom like that one), and Courtyard. All of these are close....about 4-5 miles from RTC, near Sarge's MeetandGreet held the night before PIR. Be sure to call the hotels directly and ask for the Navy Grad rate.
Diannep, I agree, I have no desire to see what they are doing to my baby boy! I raised him alone and probably was too easy on him when I shouldn't have been. I'm sure it would not be good for either one of us for me to know exactly how they are "breaking him" down so they can build him back up. I'm trusting their judgement. My husband keeps reminding me that he is in the safest place possible.
No box or letter, but contacted recruiter and he gave me address for him. Plan to mail the letters tonight that I have written daily since he left. Anybody booked their flights/hotels yet? I am going to get on that......
Excited and prouf of my recruit and can't wait for PIR!!!!!
Good Morning Everyone! Hmmm....not sure you would want to be flies on the wall at Bootcamp to see what is going on. The first part is "not pretty" with lots of yelling going on. Remember, it is the job of the RDCs to take a ton of SRs, from all different ages, backgrounds, experiences, etc and mold them into sailors. So it takes a while to get all in a division (around 88 SRs) on the "same page." But by about Training Week 4 (which is actually called Hell Week because they are so busy, lots to do)....which is about Bootcamp Week 5 in most cases (there are only 6 actual training weeks)....they are doing much better! And the build back up has started! So....just treasure those phones calls home (have phones ready at all times, calls are very random) and those letters that will start arriving in a week or two. They can't mail out letters for the first 2 weeks of Bootcamp until the Recruit Mail Petty Officer is trained. So once they are given this mail (which is usually right after they have written their first letters to you, so if they say "why haven't you written", just know that they probably got your"held" letters right after they mailed their own)....they then will be able to write once a week (collected on Sundays) but they can receive mail M-F.
