Hi ladies, I haven't commented alot, but I do read everyone's post. I'm so excited to see everyone and to see my SR. The call Saturday while she was in Recruit Heaven was great. Waiting on the I'm a Sailor phone call.

This is part of a comment I made on one of my group pages and I was asked to share this with my all my PIR groups so I am pasting it here for you as well.

I know this site can be a bit hard to get used to. But once you spend a little time here it is not bad at all. And for all those who do use Facebook, including myself, we all know that it is not always so easy. It seems that just when you think you haveFacebook all figured out they re-do the format and change it all again and it is like starting over. We all complain and freak out and beg them to put it back the way it was but we stay there and learn it all over again. At least with this site they don't make such drastic changes. Just spend some time here and ask questions. We will help you learn to navigate this site. It really is easy :)

You can ask anyone who knows me. I am here and I am on facebook to help other people the same way that others on this site helped me. I go above and beyond what most people would do to help a stranger and I truly believe there are several others on this site and facebook who do that as well. We like helping people, it is in our nature and that is what we do. I have driven 3 hours to help a fellow Navy Mom who needed me. I have held get together's in towns I visit to bring Navy Moms in those area's together. I have done that in FL, VA Beach/Norfolk area and in Wilmington NC area. I provided snacks and drinks and we all just talked for hours about our Sailors and recruits. I really enjoy meeting other Navy Moms/Wives, Grandmas etc. I recently had another Navy mom offer to drive 3 hours to help my Sailor who is very sick right now. Really? Who does that? I can tell you who does that. A Navy Mom does that!!! I don't know many people in this world who would drive 3 hours to take some soup to someone they had never met and it just be purely out of the goodness of their heart. I truly feel very much appreciated on this site and on facebook because I am told how appreciated I am. I think it is important to let others know how much we appreciate them. We all have a need to feel loved and appreciated and I am sure that is why I continue to spend several hours a day reading posts and comments and answering questions to help those who need it. We are one great big Navy family and I am blessed to have all of you as my friends.

So, please spread the word about this site, tell others how much you appreciate what they do and as Ellen Degeneres says "Be kind to one another" <3 We are family now :-)

OmahaRudy - you are too funny!  LOL!

Thanks so much Loriemae :-)

Here are some PIR tips for you all.....

If you are planning to drive to the base: don't line up in the far right lane the morning of PIR. That lane ends, so stay to the left of it and it will save you lots of wait time. You can also choose to stay in the far left lane and make a left turn in front of the gate at the base. Then drive down that street and make a U-turn. The wait time on that road is usually even less. If time allows check your route the day before PIR so you know exactly where you are going and how to get there.

When you get into the PIR Hall take some practice shots with your digital camera. Change your settings until you get the best pictures possible with the lighting and environment you are in. You can even try turning off your flash to see if that would produce the best pictures. Your pictures will come out much better and you will be glad you took the time to do it.

If you go to Gurnee Mills Mall keep track of the amount of time you have. That mall is huge and there are no pass through stores or hall ways to work as short cuts. It is Z shaped so if you start at one end you have to go back to where you started the same way you came. And, you don’t want to get your Sailor back to the base late.

If your Sailor tells you the day of PIR that they will be on a chartered flight you won’t get to meet them at the airport. They go straight from the base to the Jet and don’t come inside. This doesn’t happen very often but it did happen to us and we didn’t really say goodbye on Friday night because we thought we would have several hours with her at the airport. Had we known we wouldn’t see her at the airport our goodbye wood have been different and we wouldn’t have been at the airport searching for her.

I duct taped my phone to my ear today so I'll be ready :)

aster:  So appreciated when you all post your PIR experiences on the next PIR group.  SO helpful to them.  Thanks so much for planning to do this!

Comment by diannep on July 24, 2012 at 9:17am

Your sailors will be in Dress Whites.  The pik below was from my son's PIR, which happened in a Feb.  That is why they have their trenchcoats on.  COLD!  But they were in the Dress Blues.

Comment by aster on July 24, 2012 at 9:16am

Thank you diannep - we are all so excited to see our new sailors, and the results of all their hard work and the hard work of their RDC's! This site has been truly a blessong. When I arrive back home I will write the next PIR how our PIR went.

Thank you again!
