Ramada does have free shuttle to RTC.
I am a full supporter of the SHUTTLE! Worked out great for us, We bypassed the line of cars, and had no problem picking one back up afterwards. They run for about 2 hours after PIR is over, plenty of time. They will not let you explore the base (only the NEX area)...so there is really no reason to hang out at RTC after PIR. I even suggest that those not needing to pay for pictures at the RTC NEX skip visiting there and visit the larger one off-base...which is nearby. The RTC NEX gets VERY crowded.
Thank you diannep for the info. The man I spoke with said they didn't have a shuttle but mentioned the bus that came by. Do you recommend driving to the base or riding the shuttle. I have heard both. I know you wouldn't have to walk as far but will it be better for your sailor and leaving to drive? We are going to rent a car, haven't done that yet either.
lisarobin: Springhill Suites is another hotel that we have heard good things about, including how wonderful the staff is to the sailors/families! Only negative was that one lady called to see if they had a PIR shuttle, and they said no. Must have been a "new" employee because they do have the PIR shuttle. The shuttles are actually "taxis" that operate as shuttles on PIR day. The usually charge $3/pp each way, sailor returns with you (usually for free). I believe Ramada as its own shuttle which is free. Not positive, but think so.
Springhill Suites is right by the big Walmart center, where there are restaurants, etc. Courtyard Inn is there too. Residence is just up the street. Springhill, Courtyard and Residence are all Marriott hotels. I'm a bit partial to those as my sailor used to work for Marriott! They are known for their nice accommodations and great service.
Ladies, book your hotels early...you can always change or cancel if you book directly with the hotel (may not be the case if you book through something like Expedia, etc...). This is summer time and there is a Six Flags nearby so hotels may fill up more than usual. So book your hotel early, and wait a little on your flights if you can. I say that about the flights because I booked early, my son was asmoed (setback) in his 3rd week of training, so I had to change my flights. I had non-refundable tickets (refundable that RTC suggests getting are WAY too expensive...it is usually cheaper even with a change fee to do non-refundable). Thankfully, my new flight dates were cheaper, so it was like a cut my change fee in half.
Remember, Southwest Airlines (flies into Midway (Chicago) and Milwaukee)...has no change fee and 2 bags are checked for free. Milwaukee is about 45-60 minute drive to RTC; Ohare about 30-35 if no traffic; Midway is about an hour or more...again with no traffic. Traffic in Chicago is pretty heavy so the chances of no traffic during the week are slim, But you shouldn't have a problem on the weekend. They just offered some great rates to many cities earlier this week.
So...wait a while on booking flights (unless there is a super special!) and book your hotels now.
WendyLyn,
Thanks for the info about Snapfish! I love it!
