N4M's Community Guidelines

OPSEC.

~OPSEC OPerational SECurity, is always of the utmost importance.

~N4M’s also has Community Guidelines just like any other social media.

~Please take the time to read the OPSEC and N4M’s Community Guidelines.

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:

• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.

Some Suggestions:

~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.

~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option

~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends"

Kate:  They hold the mail from them for about the first 2 weeks....then once they give that to them, they can write for the first time, will always mail out on Mondays, and will receive mail M-F.

Thanks so much to you all for the great info for travel and planning around PIR! We are going to go ahead and get our tickets tomorrow. Really appreciate everyone's help.

Are there any other navy moms/loved ones out there that have not received letters from their SR? When I spoke with my son about a week and a half ago, he told me he had not received any letters from us and we had sent letters everyday once we received the form letter which had been well over a week before we spoke with him. We overnighted a whole batch! Just wondering if getting letters is usually this delayed or maybe my son is just using his free time on other things. I know it is busy and he told me he is getting up at 4 am to work out with the Seals, that is his goal --to be a Seal. Hoping to see a letter in our mailbox soon :-)

No problem, ellen.  Just wanted to make 100 percent sure it was understood since in the past, some have thought they could take their sailors to the airport for their flights!

Comment by ellen0502 on July 20, 2015 at 11:15am

Thanks for clearing that up for me diannep, my post did seem as though they could "go with them". Nope, you can meet them at the airport. :)

Comment by diannep on July 20, 2015 at 7:55am

For those booking hotels....please be sure to call the hotels directly and ask for the Navy Graduation rate (not available online or if you call the general number for the hotel chain)....and also, check the hotels you are interested in at www.TripAdvisor.com for reviews so you have no surprises!  Most of the reviews were posted by Navy families, most likely, either PIR ones or those visiting their sailors in A School.

Good Morning!

Just wanted to make sure there was not a misunderstanding on ellen's post:  You cannot go with your sailor to the airport (i.e., pick him/her up and drive them there)....they will be bussed out there as a group....but you CAN meet them there and wait with them until departure (take ID for airlines gate pass).

It is so true that sometimes recruiters have old info and hand that out as current info.  No problem.....just verify that info here since we normally have current info!  Years ago, they had something called "Family Night" the night before PIR.  That was where the families AND new sailors could meet up.  They no longer do that....now it is the MeetandGreet which is strictly for the families, no sailors will be present.  So...the changes in the Navy!

Comment by CatMom509 on July 20, 2015 at 4:40am

Kate,

Most of the families arrive on Thursday and the earlier the better.  Sarge's Meet & Greet for the Navy families takes place Thursday evening from 5:00 pm - 9:00 pm~~

On airfares, Southwest seems to have good rates and many times have sales.  They only fly into Midway, which is a good hour from Great Lakes, or Mitchell Airport in Milwaukee, which is 45 minutes and an easier drive.  2 bags checked for free and no change fee if plans change~  We personally flew into O'Hare on Delta and it was only 35 minutes into Great Lakes and a very straightforward drive!

A friend who flies frequently says Tuesdays and Wednesdays are the best day to purchase airline tickets as those are the days the fares drop...

Kate, The only thing you will receive from your son will be the form letter, and any personal letters he writes. Years ago there was a packet that was sent out after the form letter, but that no longer happens. Your son's recruiter is passing along some old information (it happens).

Most Sailors leave for A School on Saturday, but sometime a few on Sunday. If you can stay until Sunday that would be ideal, as you can go to the airport with your Sailor and wait at the gate until the flight leaves. He will not receive his A School orders until sometime in the last couple weeks of BC, too late to plan flights by then.
