Does anyone have any idea of how often and what days they get mail? I only got one letter from my daughter so far and she did not say if she had received any of the letters we sent to her. I wish I knew how long it takes for mail to get to them.

sparkey:  when did you mail your first letter?  I mailed my first letter last Monday July 18th on the first day I got their address.  My son is in Ship11/284.

Hello samsnavygil,

My son is also in that ship and division. We also started a discussion page if you haven't joined yet. Are you doing okay?

Hi kmanmom,

Well I've officially become a postal-service stalker waiting for that first real letter. I'm so anxious to hear just a little about how he is doing. Happy to report I don't tear up as often, although I have to admit, I did today looking at some pictures from just before he left. How about you? Are you hanging in there? Keeping busy and writing lots of letters sure does help!

I hope you all get as much time as possible with them at PIR and then in a few weeks are able to go see them at A-school and get even more time with them :-)

Within our family we talked about the leave/liberty thing a lot before she left ... most of the info I got from this site! Anyway we feel it is super important for us as parents to be at PIR but we understand that what liberty she gets might not be much time and not the best quality time with her.

She goes to San Antonio next so our plan is for just my husband and I to go to PIR and for her older sister and brother-in-law to see her in SA later this year after she has phased up and will hopefully have weekend liberty and more freedom, can wear civilian clothes, have a drink with dinner (she's 22), stay with us at the hotel, etc. Her A school is 14 weeks so if it does not work out for SA we are hoping she will get leave in December and we might all get some holiday time together.

We are taking her cell phone and laptop with us to GL and planning to meet her at the airport with that stuff if we can't give it to her sooner. Before she left we played with doing video chat over the computers so we can see each other and talk. I know she will be super busy in A school but once we have some calls, text messages, and hopefully video chat I think we will all feel a lot better about the separation.

With any luck we will get to spend Thanksgiving weekend with her or have her home around Christmas.

asmsNavygil-I am interested to know what the exact words used are. He may be "allowed" that but that is not what he "gets". In other words-You are allowed five apples but your gonna get two!

Is he staying in GL for "A" school or flying out?

This makes a difference on the Liberty.

Also, the holiday weekend can make another. Mine changed two days before PIR...while I was flying to GL. He was a fly out which meant that he would have left the next morning...we ended up having until Sunday morning.

Either way...the military is notorius for change!

Hey samsNavygil, my SR is in 12/285. How are you holding up? I am anxiously waiting for more "news".
Comment by diannep on July 25, 2011 at 8:08am
Hmmm....interesting, samsNavygirl.  I assume he is flying out and not staying in GL?  This being a holiday weekend, liberty could be different.  They could delay flying them out until the weekend is over.  Not a "given" but it happened in the Memorial Day group for many.  You will just have to wait and see what your SR says...but remember, as fireteamleaderswife will tell you because it happened to her sailor, flight plans can change.  In her case, for the better because her sailor got Memorial Day weekend in GL with them before flying out.  Plan to book your plans through the weekend no matter what because of this.
