diannep... how do you get to the 9/17 group?
Elaine... I got 1 call on Sat. at 2:30 lasted 19 min and 20 sec. The other two calls came at around 11 am. Sunday and lasted 30 and 45 minutes. I was so hopeing for a call yesterday to wish him a happy birthday but it didn't come. :( .Oh well maybe today.

diannep... Sam was in Civil Air Patrol from 12 to 14 yrs old and wanted to be in the air force. The squadron he was in was new and kind of political, and not real active at the time so he lost interest. He was also the kind of kid from early on that took kids under his wing that most pple wouldn't talk to.He has the ability to befriend the under-dog. So much so that he had 20 fb birthday wishes even though his friends know he is not around to receive them. I wrote them all down verbatim and will send them to him today. Unfortunately, for a whild he went down a path of disinterest and tom foolery. He couldn't decide what he wanted to do with his life so he just floated along. About 18 months ago he decided he needed to get back on track and decided to enlist in the AF. The recruiters were never available and did not return his calls. After 6 wks of this he decided to try the Navy. He took the ASVAB did very well on it and the rest is history. The recruiter tried to get him to go the NUKE route but SF wants communications. So he opted for the STG plan.

Mornin' all, slept through Cowboys game. Woke up, was on here reading for a while and then back to bed. Have been up about an hour catching up. Does anyone know how long the first phone call will be? I have been writing questions to ask him, hope we have enough time. Sobe, my son always gave me the impression he thought girls were stupid, but I have been on his FB and I'm not so sure! His phone also has a picture of a girl on it. Not to brag, but my son was a Texas Scholar. Graduated in top 25% of his class of 460. Mostly A's and B's, a couple of C's. Always did well on his state-mandated tests. I am the type of mom that would have called that girl and told her to stop calling at all hours and I would have taken his phone at night. I pay the bill, I control it. Had a dream before I woke up. He was "Yes, Ma'am and No, Ma'am". I woke up talking!!!! OMG, I can't wait to hear his voice. He is my quiet one. May have to reach through the line and pull things out of his mouth. Won't go anywhere today without my phone on me somewhere. Glad I gave everyone a laugh. Sometimes you just have to put your crazy side out there. Here's hoping many of you get calls today. Be sure to let us know. Luv y'all.

Also, I know those early "downer" letters are shocking to us moms. Sends many of us into panic. Not all recruits write them, but many do in the beginning. That is why I try to tell all of the moms out there to hold on. It gets so much better as they start "learning the drill" and the screaming calms down to a "dull roar." :-) This group should be in the part now that gets better. Just starting. They have their goal of becoming a sailor in sight now!

Great to read about your son's life journey, SOBE. Mine was similar. He just didn't like school, although he was a good student in elementary. Puberty did a number on him with that and he just lost interest! I was proud that he decided to go to college and he got his A.S. degree. BIG accomplishment for him. He worked in his major for a couple of years, didn't really like it, and decided on the Navy. He is talking about continuing his college education now while in the Navy (since he is dry docked for another couple of years, he can take one course a semester). He is not a great test taker himself...he flubbed up on the ASVAB. But thankfully what he wanted to do was open to him with his score. They all take different paths....it would be interesting for others to share on here what brought their recruit to the Navy. I'm sure that there are a million interesting stories!

Cathi, creator of the 9/17 group, just posted an interesting discussion that had info I was unaware of. About ships/divisions/honor grads....it is up at the top of the 9/17 page in "discussions" if you all care to read it. Interesting!

Good morning to everyone!

My language takes a down turn when I type. I think my mind goes faster than my fingers can go plus I'm not the most coordinated of individuals. Sobe we get what you are saying loud and clear,

I know SF wrote me 7 letters. He only sent 5 because he said the first two were very dark. He said he thought he had made a huge mistake enlisting. There was no mention of that in any of the letters he sent. He was discouraged, tired and so homesick which took me by surprise. He is doing well now so far. Take heart moms whose recruits are just starting... it is tough but they can do it.

Sobe what an inspiring post! It is amazing how much better they do when they are the ones really wanting it!
