@Elaine - LMAO, that is so funny, and sounds quite familiar too (been there, done that at least twice!). I believe you have to be a little crazy to keep from going insane when you have a loved one in boot camp.

@WelderMom - congrats on the letter. Yippee!!!! I'm doing the happy dance for you. It's so great to get that communication started. They keep them so busy, it's hard for them to write everyone. I was competing with a girlfriend, but she was wonderful and shared every letter with me, and I would share mine with her. Funny how they will tell mom some things, but friends other things. Her's were always longer too. I've said this a hundred times, but it's still true: Girlfriend trumps Mom every time!

Got my first letter!! so happy I cried, alot. Grandparents and Great-Grandparents got theirs before mine. I was feeling neglected. I mean I understand what is going on but still I am the MOM. Hopefully tomorrow another call will come. Good luck to all on here. Enjoy reading the posts and have learned lots.

Chicken is in the oven, I've got 40 minutes!!!

Okay, he's my son's story. He is brilliant (in my mind), but was never a good scholar, had to really fight for every B he got - and there weren't many. He begged to go to the continuation school because they teach differently there. I resisted, but finally gave in. Best decision I ever made! He excelled and felt so much better about himself. He did well in college (Jr. College), but didn't take the normal classes, he decided to take the Tech route and became a welder in one year (had 3 yrs of it in high school). He was the youngest welder to ever be hired by Siemen's Corp (huge global company) - this kid is good! Wanted to be back in our neck of the woods, so he came back and was hired same day by another company here as a welder. When things got tight at the company, they laid off welders who had been there for years, but not my kid, he was working 10 hr days. But he wanted more out of like and wanted to have more than one skill to make a living, so he joined the Navy. (how much time do you guys have? this could be a long story!!) I was concerned about how he would do on the tests they take to get in to the Navy, but he did well enough to get the rate he wanted (IT - Information Systems Technician, basically a computer geek). He wrote in his letters that the written tests were hard, but he was determined to pass them. Physically he was ready, passed all swim and PFA's first time out - even volunteered to run twice so he could help others as a pacer when they tested. But those written tests haunted him. Thank goodness my son believes in prayer, because that's what he did every day in bc - and at services each Sunday. He promoted to E-2 while at bc, and finished his A-School classes 6 weeks early. If they believe in themselves and if they know everyone at home believes in them too, it's truly amazing how they transform into the person they know they can be and they do succeed, they really do!

Oh, GOOD GRIEF!!! I totally lost it today. While on my cell phone with my mom about an hour ago, I am sitting in front of the computer. Coffee to right, cig and ashtray in front, notepad to left. Computer room, BC son's bedroom, is connected to my bedroom by a door. I jump up, head into my bedroom and start looking all over, FOR MY CELL PHONE THAT I AM TALKING ON!!!!! Oldest son comes in, asks what I am looking for and when I tell him he almost falls on the floor. Husband called this morning, he is a truck driver, while I was in the kitchen, almost broke down a door because my cell phone was in another room. I need a break, Cowboys on TV and need to catch up with newspapers. Be back later.

Yep, JessicaB is awesome. Never really got to know her until after my son's PIR date. Well, it's almost 6pm my time, need to make some dinner (for a change). Back later for the night shift!

Thanks, reeniegalla! I'm glad SOMEONE understands my "too hurried" mistakes on here! :-)

SOBE: REALLY????? Well, I'm quite HONORED to hear that...but I think you give me FAR too much credit! Jessica was my mentor....her concern for my son touched me so much....and I realized how much I did NOT know when my son was there....that is when I jumped in to pass on what I have learned (and keep learning)! I think you, Jessica and I work great as a team! It helps to have you on west coast time and Jess and I on east coast time! More "round the clock" coverage! :-)

Ok, correction, Jane: I meant to say: He told me about the failed academic test in a LATER personal phone call! Whoooops!
